NRC welcomes Fall interns Alexis and Olivia

NRC gives a warm welcome to the two newest members of our team! Alexis Woods (left) was born and raised in South Bend and attended school on the city’s far west side. She is currently a junior at Saint Mary's College studying communication and public relations/advertising. Olivia Propheter (right), originally from Naperville, IL, is a sophomore at Saint Mary's college studying business administration with a concentration in marketing.

Both Alexis and Olivia are excited to be working with NRC this semester. They will be coordinating and managing a review of NRC’s digital media channels, assisting with upcoming events such as the Neighborhood Leadership Academy and Trivia Around the Bend, and more. Along the way we hope to let them see behind the NRC scenes and learn about non-profit management, marketing, and community development. If you see Alexis or Olivia at a neighborhood block party or out around town, please give them a warm South Bend welcome!

Neighborhood Emergency Preparedness

Natural disasters can happen quickly and without warning. It is crucial for you and your neighbors to be prepared in advance for these events. The first step for preparing your neighborhood is to get organized. Creating a contact list, neighborhood map, stockpiles, and developing a plan with your neighbors is an important way to stay safe during natural disasters. Learn more on how to prepare your neighborhood for emergencies.

Public hearing on proposed I&M rate hike

Participating in public hearings is an excellent way to see local or state government in action, so here’s a community organizing bulletin from our friends at the Sierra Club: Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) is asking the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) for an increase in customers’ electric bills starting in July 2018. If I&M’s request is approved, the average customer’s bill will increase by more than $300 a year. Learn more about the rate increase request at the public hearing below, or at Citizens Action Coalition.

Free workshops on Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) coming soon
For community organizers, “ABCD” spells successful change from within

Save the date! NRC and IU South Bend are teaming up to bring you more Neighborhood Leadership Academy workshops, this time a three-part series on Asset-Based Community Development (“ABCD” for short).

Widely regarded as a leading method of improving communities and neighborhoods, ABCD encourages community organizers to start with what they have instead of what they need. Rather than turning to outsiders for help, ABCD principles empower neighbors to make change from within by identifying assets and making connections between them. Mark your calendars and join us to learn more. Co-presented by the IU South Bend American Democracy Project’s Civic Leadership Academy and NRC.
