NRC to present free Tax and Certificate Sale workshop

The Neighborhood Resources Connection’s 2018 Neighborhood Leadership Academy Workshop series continues with a workshop on the St Joseph County Tax Sale and Certificate Sale.

The free workshop will be held on Thursday, August 16 at 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Holobyn Meeting Room of the SJC Public Library Tutt Branch, 2223 Miami St.

The workshop will help South Bend residents better understand the process of how tax liens are sold. When owners fall behind on property taxes, the liens may be auctioned — providing opportunities for neighbors to become better stewards of these neglected assets. Participants will learn more about these auctions, the legal steps winning bidders must follow, the redemption rights of property owners, and whether this method of acquiring property is right for them.

Additional upcoming workshops:
  • The Alphabet Soup of Community Development: TIFs, CDCs, and CDBGs -- Thursday, Sept. 20, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
  • “Good Neighbor” Law -- Thursday, Oct. 18 , 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
More about upcoming Neighborhood Leadership Academy Workshops

NRC organizing downtown neighborhood association steering committee

NRC joined other downtown-area employers, educational institutions, and community resource providers Thursday at the Neighborhood Empowerment Fair. Why? To empower the downtown neighborhood, of course!

A resident's neighborhood association doesn't yet exist... but we know a lot of you think it should, so we're rounding up a few good downtownies (we just made that word up, but it works) to help get things started. Interested? Contact NRC to get on the interest list, and we'll let you know what's next.

Neighborhood Updates:
Miami Village: Neighborhood Cleanup set for Aug. 25

Attention Miami Villagers! Your neighborhood association is organizing a volunteer Neighborhood Clean up on Saturday, August 25th! Meet at the Bargain Corner Convenience Mart at the corner of Twyckenham Drive and Calvert Street at 9 AM. South Bend Code Enforcement will be on hand and will provide gloves and trash bags as well as pick up of our filled trash bags.
Kennedy Park: KPNA neighborhood surveys are underway

Members of the Kennedy Park Neighborhood Association are taking their recent Neighborhood Leadership Academy experience to the next level with a Vision Planning project. The project calls for outreach to 100 neighbors, an “Ideas Session,” and other efforts to determine what Kennedy Park neighbors want for their neighborhood. NRC is excited to assist with yard signs, flyers, and co-facilitation. Kennedy Park neighbors, watch for KPNA surveyors with green nametags in your neighborhood evenings between July 31-August 13!
City of South Bend Updates:
Mayor unveils proposed budget

Mayor Pete Buttigieg has unveiled the proposed 2019 budget for the City of South Bend, kicking off a months-long process for citizen input. The budget's focus includes "quality of life in neighborhoods," citing provisions for sidewalks, parks, street lights, Code Enforcement, and more. NRC is happy to hear that the budget responds to many concerns raised by neighborhood associations (ABC57 story), affirming what we already know: it benefits neighborhoods to be organized!

If you'd like to have input on how the budget should be revised over the coming weeks, pay attention to the schedule of budget hearings and watch for your opportunities to have a say.
