NRC Program Notes
There's only a few spaces left for Saturday's workshop offered through NRC's Neighborhood Leadership Academy! This session is focused on how South Bend's budget process works, and what it means for our neighborhoods. City CFO John Murphy and City Controller Jennifer Hockenhull will be on hand to guide the discussion.
The public is invited to learn more about how to understand the budget, connect with city leaders and advocate for neighborhood priorities, but registration is required. Call NRC at 574.287.0425 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for those last-minute seats.
Where's Gerome the Gnome now?
South Bend's favorite neighborhood gnome is making his summer travels, so watch for details on Gerome the Gnome! There's an NRC gnome T-shirt awarded each week, so be sure to like the NRC Facebook page and join in the gnome fun, guessing where Jerome is this time and picking up a prize.
Congratulations to Chris Kubisiak Wilson and Jeanne Ross, our most recent weekly winners. Also to Joe Teschetta of the Near Northwest Neighborhood! He was the June grand prize winner. All weekly winners go into the monthly drawing for the grand prize, a choice between two South Bend Cubs game tickets, where winners go on the field for the Brew Werks community partner check presentation, or two tickets to NRC's Trivia Around the Bend on November 10.

It's time to apply for the newly designed Neighborhood Leadership Academy! The deadline is July 29, and it's easy to apply online at this link. Or, contact NRC for more information at 574.287.0425 or email email@example.com.
The 2017-2018 program offers two stages of training, and the Fall 2017 session begins on September 21. There are eight sessions that build knowledge and skills for South Bend's new and emerging neighborhood leaders, leading to an action plan for your neighborhood at the end of the sessions. A second stage in Spring 2018 advances the leadership training with an emphasis on sustaining a membership-based neighborhood association.

South Bend Neighborhood Spotlight
Sometimes it's good to remember that it's the mayor who is a neighbor too! Mayor Pete was out and about in his own backyard this holiday weekend to attend the annual Fourth of July kids' bike parade in the North Shore Triangle, a beloved tradition there. Thanks for sharing those pictures and videos, Neighbor Pete!
Neighborhood Toolbox Tip
Thanks to the South Bend Police Department officers who participated in the June NRC Roundtable meeting last week. The NRC coordinates the citywide Neighborhood Leadership Roundtable, a quarterly meeting of active community leaders engaged in their neighborhood associations, for discussions on key issues affecting residential life. It's one way for leaders to connect with each other, share their challenges and experiences, and learn new ideas for creating strong neighborhoods.
If you are a new or emerging leader, or recently elected to your neighborhood association board, let the NRC know! The NRC program is by invitation, so we want to make sure all of our neighborhoods and their current leaders are included. Call Diana at 574.287.0425 or email nrcneighbors@gmail for more details.
Sustainability in South Bend Neighborhoods
Do you have a neighbor who's been doing amazing things in the garden? Does your neighborhood association want to encourage more green on your streets? Then consider taking a page from your River Park neighbors! They're giving out the Lavish Lawn Award during the summer months, with Potawatomi Conservatories & and Builders Store (Do-It Best Hardware) -- some of their own neighbors -- among the prize sponsors. Joan Yoder's home on S. 30th Street won the first of this season's awards.
"We caught her a bit off guard with the presentation of the award, but it was very nice to chat with her about her love of gardening," says the River Park team. "She has been maintaining quite the array of plants and flowers for many years now, both in the front and backyard."
