South Bend Police welcome the community to the annual Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday August 5. That's from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at SBPD HQ, 701 W. Sample St. This kid-friendly event features police vehicles, fire trucks and other displays. Food, fun, and NRC and other vendors with info booths and giveaways focused on SB neighborhoods, crime and the role of empowered residents. Get details from SBPD here

Unity Gardens plans a Garden Fest Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the main LaSalle Square Garden, 3701 Prast. The event features a cookout, live music, vendors and info related to community health, sustainability and gardening.  For more information about the event, and to learn more about Unity Gardens, see Facebook. Applications are open until August 20 for the Fall 2015 session of Neighborhood Leadership Academy. Classes begin September 17. This eight-week program, offered by NRC in partnership with the South Bend Heritage Foundation, is designed to develop strong neighborhood leaders. We’ve had 80 South Bend residents join us for NLA and welcome you to grow  too! Download an app at the link.

Our next NRC summer raffle drawing is August 7. We'll have early-bird prize drawings during the "Arts Alive" DTSB First Fridays event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the 200 block of S. Michigan St., with ticket sales the first hour and drawings beginning at 7 p.m. Our prizes in August include a getaway stay at the Doubletree, original artwork from Peter Ringenberg, a $50 Bruno's Pizza gift certificate and more. All winners remain eligible for the Martin's Super Market groceries and other grand prize options we're excited about too! 

Our July early-bird raffle winners included Barbara Adams, who won the 
DTSB Wine Walk tickets, and Kim McKinnies, who won the $50 Fiddler's Hearth gift certificate and Miss Saigon tickets from South Bend Civic Theater. Congratulations to all and thank you for supporting the NRC's work in our South Bend neighborhoods!

July 30     Dena Woods performs tonight at Seitz & Sounds. The weekly Thursday night concert in Seitz Park downtown, at Washington St. along the St. Joseph River, kicks off at 6 p.m. with SOUNDFX DJ's and runs until 10 p.m. Details here
July 31     Last call! This is the extended deadline for commission of gallery art to be placed on semi-permanent display at the Near Northwest Neighborhood Community Space, 1007 Portage Ave. For details about this SB150 Community Art Gallery and the project, see the NNN website
Aug. 1       The life of South Bend neighborhood leader and community activist Marti Lewis will be honored at 2 p.m. at Potawatomi Conservatories, 2105 Mishawaka Ave. A new garden and sculpture will honor Marti, a founding member of the Botanical Society of South Bend who died in 2010. Aug. 9      Howard Park Neighborhood Association plans its community cleanup from 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. Bags and gloves provided. Meet at Zion UCC, 211 S. St. Peter St., and plan to stay for the church cookout and ice cream social after the beautification work! Facebook event page here

Aug. 13     The Well in River Park plans a back-to-school party beginning at 4 p.m. at the neighborhood coffeehouse, 2410 Mishawaka Ave. Pizza, crafts and some school supplies are part of the fun. Aug. 15      Stories for Peace invites you to share your story of peacemaking in South Bend, for a collection of 150 essays, no more than 500 words each, by this deadline! This effort of the Community for Peace and Nonviolence is looking for "stories about people choosing love over anger, dialogue over violence, forgiveness over vengeance" in creating community and reconciliation. Submissions may include captioned photographs, video and audio, or requests to be interviewed rather than writing your submission. Contact for complete details or submissions.

All South Bend neighborhood association groups that have registered with NRC are eligible for the 2015 Block Party grants, each $150 in honor of SB150 and designed specifically to help build neighborhood identity and relationships! Existing or emerging neighborhoods are invited to complete a voluntary registration form available on the NRC website here. Community Homebuyers Corporation Homeownership Assistance Program: The Homeowner Assistance Program is the result of six local financial institutions joining with the City of South Bend to help people get a good home at an affordable price.  For those who qualify and meet some simple ongoing criteria, grant money is available as a forgivable loan equal to 20% of the purchase price based on household income.  See
