NRC Program Notes
Engaging Youth, Engaging Neighborhoods has kicked off with an exciting new semester of exploration for South Bend students, with weekly sessions at the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture. The project gives voice to neighborhood youth, grades 6-12, and allows the community to see South Bend neighborhoods through their eyes. Using a digital camera, students explore their neighborhoods and communicate both what they like, and what they would like to see changed, about where they live.
They then meet in small groups to explore literature, art, writing and discussion with Notre Dame professors to talk about why they selected the subjects they did, and to ultimately develop and propose a realistic plan to solve one of the things they identified as needing to be changed. The EYEN goal is to provide an opportunity for youth to learn how to engage in civic life and to develop a new generation of community leaders.
The NRC currently is raising funds to frame the youth photos for a South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center exhibit, reception and graduation ceremony. Please contact Diana at 574.287.0425 to discuss sponsorship and donation opportunities for this important program.

South Bend Neighborhood Spotlight
John Horton in the Near Northwest Neighborhood is part of a dynamic duo on the team that helped to launch The Local Cup coffeehouse, a community focal point for conversation, community dialogue, the arts and more. John and his wife, Brook Hardy, have invested in building up both the physical space and the human connections in the NNN. Thanks, John and Brook, for your work in our South Bend neighborhoods! The NNN meets at various times throughout the year to plan events and discuss neighborhood issues, and you can learn more at http://www.nearnorthwest.org/.
