NRC Trivia Night
Think you know your South Bend history? Show it off on February 25 during Trivia Around the Bend and help support our work in South Bend neighborhoods! The event begins at 7 p.m. at The Hall at St. Peter's, 915 N. Ironwood Drive. Only $10 per person to participate. We encourage you to register a team table of up to 8 individuals but also welcome individuals and couples to register. It's easy to sign up online at Eventbrite, or by mail. See complete details on the NRC Facebook page.
Thanks to Charles A. Reger & Associates and McKinnies Realty for sponsoring trivia rounds! If your business would like to sponsor a trivia round or table, or donate a gift card, please call the NRC office at 574.287.0425 or email Diana at email@example.com for sponsor details. That’s the same contact for more information about the event too.
NRC Program Notes
The NRC is extending an invitation to anyone actively involved on neighborhood issues and organizing, who would like to join the Neighborhood Leadership Roundtable meetings held quarterly across the city. We'd like to add eligible community leaders to the invitation list!
Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to attend the next NRC Roundtable, which is planned by invitation for March 30. Let us know if you want to join us! For our existing neighborhood association leaders, please let NRC know if you have any monthly meeting time or leadership changes so we can update our information.
NRC Community Partner Corner
South Bend residents often ask about how to invest in their communities by purchasing vacant properties available at tax sale, and NRC participates in educational presenations with the Near Northwest Neighborhood and other community partners to help citizens understand the process.
The new County Commissioners Certificate Sale begins March 15, with available properties listed in the South Bend Tribune and online, through the company that manages the sale. The main difference between the fall tax sale and the commissioner's sale is the shorter 120-day redemption period, and frequently lower minimum bids on parcels that did not sell at the prior county tax sale(s). If interested, you can learn more at southbendin.gov; complete details are available from the county at this link.
South Bend Neighborhood Spotlight
Look, it's Connie Wendt from Unity Gardens! Although many people know Connie from The Music Village and her other interests, Connie is a west-side neighbor who's been busy building community at LaSalle Square. The main Unity Gardens location is home to Connie's successful efforts to connect with the neighbors of Beacon Heights, who live nearby, and residents of the Heritage Place at LaSalle Square. Connie's a welcoming force in the gardens and for South Bend, in the neighborhoods that Unity calls home too.
NRC Neighborhood Toolbox Tip
Participating in NRC's Neighborhood Leadership Academy is a great way to begin or grow your neighborhood association, and we're busy working on the next free classes for South Bend leaders.
You can learn more about how NLA works and how to participate here. In fact, we're so busy working on the NLA plans that we're hiring a part-time coordinator to do it! If you think you might be a good fit, or know someone who is, check the posting at Indeed.com and the easy online application.
Sustainability in South Bend Neighborhoods
The Bike Michiana Coalition is planning a new project to encourage more cycling for fun and transportation. They're planning a series of pop-up events to offer bicycle check-ups, bicycle cleaning and maintenance education, commuting advice and more.
The coalition is looking for volunteers, and conducting a survey to gauge interest and get a sense of what kinds of skills, from mechanics to marketing, people might want to share. The survey is linked here, and you can contact Chris Vanden Bossche at email@example.com for more information.
