Jenn's Hurricane Sandy Experience

I live in Brooklyn, New  York in an area designated a mandatory evacuation zone.  I packed a bag which included my jewelry supplies and went to stay with my sister, Jacklyn, who lives on 50th street in Manhattan.  I am pleased to tell you that we made it through the night without losing power.   A neighbor of mine stayed in the apartment building and she let me know that we lost power but the building did not sustain any damage.   Like many of you, I watched the news and the damage that was done.  The subway system was flooded which made getting back to Brooklyn an adventure.  On Thursday, I acted like a New Yorker and walked home.  The next day I hopped on my bike so that I wouldn't miss another day of work.  My experience really gave me a chance to reflect.  I feel fortunate to be in business with my mother, Debbie who taught me to work hard, do what it takes to get the job done, care about the environment, and be kind to others.  I have witnessed first hand the devastation Hurricane Sandy caused in New York and New Jersey.  This type of hardship seems to bring out the best and worst in people.  I've watched cab drivers gouge riders but I've also watched people opening their homes to those who lost power.  My sister has been gathering supplies for those in need and many of my friends are volunteering.  I want to be among those who makes a difference.  I was indoors for several days and created a lot of new jewelry from now until Thanksgiving Day, Jenn's Jems is going to donate 20% of our sales from that jewelry to the Red Cross.  Purchases can be made at our store inside the Pittsburgh Public Market in the Strip District on Smallman Street across from Costume World, our website or our facebook page Jenn's Jems.
