Bow Arts in Tower Hamlets

In addition to the Poplar Partnership consortium, Bow Arts will be busy delivering a range of other projects in the borough. This includes after school ceramics clubs at Old Palace Primary and Clara Grant Primary, Year 2 and Year 4 topic-based projects at St Matthias Primary, creative PPA cover at Wellington Primary, and an exciting public art project at Bow School.

Poplar Partnership News #1

Welcome to the Bow Arts Poplar Partnership newsletter! We hope you had a restful summer and are excited for the year ahead. This half-termly newsletter will feature updates and reminders about the programme of activity taking place across the partnership, providing a chance for you to see what other schools in the consortium are up to and show off your own projects.

The programme got off to a vibrant start last term with our first teacher CPD session, a screen printing class at Langdon Park School. Artist Eleanor Lines had us creating simple but beautiful screen prints using masking tape and easy paper stencils. This was followed by a bit of larking about on the Thames foreshore, where artist Louise Sayarer inspired us to craft temporary artworks and share creative writing using found objects and the natural environment. Finally, a group of teachers received training to lead and assess the Arts Award Discover and Explore qualifications, enabling arts projects in your school to be accredited.

With the new term underway we’re excited to kick-start the next phase of the programme, which will feature more inspiring CPD sessions, the gifted and talented after school club programme and, of course, your schools’ bespoke projects.

Autumn CPD Programme

Coming up this half-term we have two more CPD sessions designed to get your creative juices flowing. We’ll be exploring art in the outdoor environment at Lansbury Lawrence Primary School on Thursday 18th September; discover simple ways to take learning out of the classroom and put your school’s outdoor spaces to good use. Then join us at St Saviour’s Primary School for an introduction to textiles on Thursday 16th October. Make sure to book your places in good time so that your colleagues don’t miss out.

Date for your Diary

The next coordinators meeting will take place at Manorfield Primary on 11th September, 1.30-3.30pm. The meeting will be a chance for you to share what is happening in your school and discuss next steps, so make sure you don't miss it.

Time to Explore...

Three fantastic artists will be working with pupils from across the consortium on Arts Award Explore after school club projects this term. Gifted and talented pupils from the Poplar Partnership primaries will take part in a range of art activities designed to inspire and challenge them, and prepare them for the transition to KS3 Art. Activities will include visits to artist studios and arts organisations, giving participants the opportunity to stretch their understanding of what art is and how it is made. The clubs begin on Wednesday 24th September. Don’t forget to submit the names and emergency contact details of your school’s participants as soon as possible.

Coming up in Poplar...

  • Bespoke projects will be launching in some Poplar Partnership schools this term. We’re excited to be working on such a wide range of projects, from permanent artworks to improve school grounds and targeted pupil interventions to skills-based programmes and cross-curricular projects.
  • We’ll be celebrating your pupils’ achievements across the year at a special sharing event in March. This will be a chance for your young people to share their skills, learn from their peers and take pride in their work. Details of the event will be shared soon.
