Local Nonprofit Taking Sustainability Work to Madagascar

The Offset Project (TOP) will lead Sustainable Events and Business Workshop in Antananarivo, Madagascar

MONTEREY, CA â€“ The Offset Project (TOP), a local waste offset nonprofit, is headed to Antananarivo, Madagascar this week where ED Kristin Cushman will lead a first-of-its-kind workshop on sustainable event and business management.

Workshop attendees will include representatives of the World Bank, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Economic Development Board of Madagascar among others.

"We're honored to be sharing these best practices and models for success for the first time in Madagascar," said TOP Executive Director and Founder Kristin Cushman. "We often find ourselves buried - literally - in our waste mitigation work. So to be recognized on this level and present our work to the international community is a real milestone for TOP."

TOP's workshop will focus on sustainable business practices for events and businesses, including an overview of eco tourism in the United States and an in-depth look at the advantages associated with sustainable practices, which often include significant cost savings. The half-day workshop will also cover sustainable initiatives planning, as well as implementation of zero waste policies and certifications, and leveraging partnerships to create local carbon offset programs.

This is TOP's first international training. The success of the organization's work with international events here on the Monterey Peninsula, including the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am and the Big Sur International Marathon - both of which divert 90% of event waste with TOP's help - has earned TOP numerous awards and generated nationwide requests for trainings and support.

TOP was founded by Cushman in 2007 after she inadvertently found herself in the sustainability field while following her personal drive to recycle, compost and up-cycle. Eight years later, TOP has developed an unprecedented network of clients, volunteers and sustainability partners. The organization also runs California’s first local community carbon fund - the Monterey Bay Carbon Fund - and has become the Monterey Peninsula’s go-to for event and business sustainability certifications, workshops and trainings, and management of zero waste events.
