40 KC metro area girls learned the bare bones about careers in orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering at the 4th Annual Perry Initiative Workshop sponsored by
KC STEM Alliance. Girls drilled, sawed and sutured through mock surgical procedures, working side by side with staff and volunteers from UMKC School of Medicine, Children's Mercy Hospital, University of Kansas Medical School and West Central MO AHEC.
Students across the Greater Kansas City region stand to benefit from a practical plan to improve K-12 STEM education practices.
The
STEM Excellence Pathway Workshop
welcomed more than 140 educators, representing 23 KC metro area school districts plus charter and private schools, who gathered to evaluate and discuss the state of STEM education in their schools. Thank you to the Carnegie Science Center for providing the rubric for assessing current STEM programming and recognizing the importance of incorporating families, community, post-secondary and industry partners in a student's STEM journey. The workshop, held at the Center for STEM Learning - KU Edwards Campus, was made possible by KC STEM Alliance and its generous partners.
JUMP at the chance to build a team, then design, build and test (as in, break) your custom bridge. ROOBUILDERS is a middle and high school bridge-building competition organized annually by the faculty at UMKC School of Computing and Engineering in partnership with Missouri Society of Professional Engineers. Learn additional details and registration information.  Deadline: October 31, 2014
Notre Dame de Sion's FIRST® Tech Challenge team geared up to share robotics rigor with 1,000 girls at September's Girls STEM Expo @ Union Station. In October, members of the team attended KCPT's screening of MAKERS: Women in Space and were honored to meet and talk with a woman who paved the launch pad for female astronauts, Mercury 13 member and Kansas City, KS native, Sarah Ratley. Curiosity. It's in our DNA.
150 middle school girls from Johnson & Douglas counties in Kansas asked hard questions of 30 female STEM professionals who encouraged their desire to find answers at STEM: It's a Girl Thing! Young Women's Conference 2014 presented by Johnson County Community College's Career and Technical Education Pathways program.
KC STEM Alliance was pleased to participate and partner in the event.
KC STEM Allliance staff had a ball, bouncing STEM college and career paths around with 1,300 middle school students at North Kansas City School District's Career & Education Fair. Using an InfoMotion 94fifty Smart Sensor Basketball, students learned how science, technology, engineering and math play a part in every field, even their favorite sport. In 20 seconds flat, this young man
dribbled 172 times.
