Culturally STEAMed K-6 Academy

Learn all about Culturally STEAMed K-6 Academy, a new experience to be launched by Urban TEC founder Ina Montgomery this fall. The academy, set to start in September, is made up of three components:

• Hands-on / engaging STEAM activities
• Academic tutoring to assist students to be proficient in core subjects
• The celebration of the contributions/inventions of Black Americans

Nature Discovery ECOS with Green Works in KC

This program for 4th through 8th graders in urban Kansas City encourages young people to step away from the screens and make positive connections with nature and with new friends. The FREE Nature Discovery ECOS program begins its fall sessions on Sept. 10 and continues weekly through Nov. 19. ECOS includes hikes, bird watching, identification of native trees and plants and nature art projects combined with social and emotional learning, mindfulness and journaling.

8/31: Keystone Sessions: 'Beyond the Gap' 

Learn how to create your own framework for action

The Keystone Innovation District's Keystone Sessions offer those interested in new ideas a chance to gather in a casual setting to listen to speakers, engage with panels, and meet one-on-one with leaders in the community. 

On Wednesday, Aug. 31, join KC STEM Alliance's Christina Chandler and Kansas City Action Fund's Andrea Ellis to learn about "Beyond the Gap," a solutions-oriented approach to moving beyond the racial gap and increasing access to STEM education in PK-12. You'll get a firsthand introduction to a Framework for Action that can help schools, communities and regions develop a plan of work and act.

The sessions take place 4-8 p.m. at the Keystone CoLAB, 800 E. 18th St., Kansas City, Mo. Food and drinks will be provided.

Organizations with STEM outreach activities to share are invited to reserve space at the National Society of Black Engineers Jr. Community STEM Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the Royals Urban Youth Academy.

Before digging into logistics for Remake Learning Days in Kansas City in 2023, the regional planning team is setting aside some time to dream big and brainstorm ways to build momentum and awareness. All who are interested are welcome!

Bonus: Enjoy meeting in the newly opened Dan and Cassidy IDEA Space KC, with an optional short tour to follow. The IDEA Space KC's mission is to build a mutually supportive space in south Kansas City where students and educators explore Innovation, Discovery, Entrepreneurship and Arts through consistent, ongoing learning experiences.

KC STEM Summit 2022, brought to you by KC STEM Alliance, is your opportunity to connect, collaborate and communicate with colleagues from other organizations offering STEM- or STEAM-related experiences in the Kansas City region and the organizations that support this work. Jackson County grants for Science City

A grant from Jackson County provides funding this fall for up to 6,000 student scholarships for Science City field trips or Science City on the Road Stage Shows, plus an additional 1,000 student scholarships to experience Union Station’s touring exhibitions. 

Scholarship visits are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and are available to student’s grades K-12 for Title I schools who receive 50 percent or more free or reduced lunches, in Jackson County, Mo. 

Fall scholarship applications are due by Friday, Oct. 2, and all visits must be completed by Friday, Dec. 2, 2022.

Kansas City Royals recognize STEM educators

Thanks to the Kansas City Royals for celebrating STEM education during a home stand earlier this month. STEM-related organizations including WeCodeKC, aSTEAM Village and Girl Scouts were celebrated along with the KC STEM Alliance.

As part of the celebration, Kansas City Public School’s Ericka Mabion was honored with the Buck O’Neil Legacy Seat in recognition of her advocacy for STEM students and her Project Lead The Way Administrator of the Year award. Congratulations!

Celebrate Black Engineers, Inventors & Innovators

10 a.m.-Noon, Friday, Sept. 16

Join aSTEAM Village in a celebration of Black Engineers, Inventors, and Innovators at the historic GEM Theater. Cynthia Newsome will moderate a fireside chat with the co-founders of the National Society of Black Engineers. Special guest James Howard, Executive Director of the Black Inventors Hall of Fame, will introduce the premiere of his short documentary, "Black Inventors Got Game," which highlights four African American inventors and their groundbreaking contributions to the toy and game industry.

This free event will also be the very last time the Traveling Trunk of African American & Latino Inventors will be on display in Kansas City. The assets of this world-renowned archive of black inventors, inventions and patents will be turned over to the National Black Inventors Hall of Fame Museum.
