An Ode to Erma Bombeck

Hello dear friend,

My deepest apologies! I accidentally sent you a broken link to Erma's story. That has been fixed below.

A few weeks back, on February 21st, Erma Bombeck would have turned 93-years-old. She was almost 40 when her humor column was syndicated.

Erma said she started writing it because she "was too old for a paper route, too young for Social Security, and too tired for an affair." But that's nowhere near the whole story.

With her trademark wit, Erma took on aging, motherhood, and pointless cultural norms. For women weary of 1950s stereotypes, hearing "No one ever died from an unmade bed" wasn't just funny, it was revolutionary.

Erma was wildly successful for three more decades, something she never anticipated. (She passed away at age 69 from kidney disease.)

But it all started with the courage to take a chance on herself later in life.

Photo of OLDUSKA model

More Proof It's Never Too Late

Fabulous face, yes? Her name is Olga. She's signed with the OLDUSKA modeling agency in Russia, which only books models over age 45.

Photographer Igor Gavar founded OLDUSKA after spending time photographing "retiree" street style:
I met some very interesting faces and I wanted to do a separate project with them. A modeling agency became that sort of project.
The demand for older models has caught fire from product ads to the runways. OLDUSKA's Instagram feed highlights some of the big brands using Gavar's agency.

A few decades ago, I couldn't have said, "It's never too late to be a model." Times are changing, slowly but surely.

Happy soon-to-be-Spring! (Can you believe it?)
