We're Moving!

EarthCorps Develops
Puget Sound-Specific Pollinator Guide
EarthCorps has developed a new Native Habitat Restoration Guide of best management practices for the Puget Sound Lowlands. The guide has a wealth of information from site assessment and design to installation techniques and long-term stewardship. KCD is offering FREE cover crop seed to King County residents who have had their soil tested. Stop by KCD’s new office at 800 SW 39th St in Renton, between 8:30 AM and 5 PM, to pick up your package of cover crop seed, or visit us at one of the following farmers markets during the month of September. Bee Ball with the Mariners
September 9, Seattle
Join the Seattle Mariners, Woodland Park Zoo and Lynn Brunelle, author of Turn This Book into a Beehive, on Sunday, September 9, as the Mariners take on the New York Yankees. Green Kent Enters
Its Ninth Year
KCD has supported Kent’s stewardship of natural areas in parks since 1998. KCD provides native bareroot plants through the KCD Native Bareroot Plant Sale as well as ongoing funding for volunteer and crew support for removing invasive weeds and installing native plants in the majority of Kent’s parks through the Green Kent Partnership program.
CHOMP!
KCD staff and Better Ground Ambassadors recently spent a beautiful afternoon educating kids and families about native pollinators through a hands-on pollinator hotel project where participants built their own bee habitats. The activity was a successful part of this years’ CHOMP!, a local food and sustainable living festival hosted by King County in Redmond’s Marymoor Park.

A Forestry Class for Landowners
Washington State University's flagship course will teach you how to assess your trees, avoid insect and disease problems, attract wildlife, and take practical steps to keep your forest on track to provide enjoyment and even income for years to come. In this course you will develop your own Forest Stewardship Plan, which brings state recognition as a Stewardship Forest and eligibility for cost-share assistance, and may also qualify you for significant property tax reductions.

Better Ground Ambassador

Help KCD promote local food, healthy forests and clean waters by becoming a Better Ground Ambassador. Join us for the next orientation on Thursday, September 13, from 6 to 7 PM at the Beacon Hill Library in Seattle. As an ambassador, you'll help educate the public about local conservation at farmers markets, the NW Flower and Garden Show, and across King County. Click HERE for more information and to register.

Restoration Events
Experience stream and wetland restoration firsthand and help KCD implement successful restoration projects! Each season provides different types of volunteer opportunities including: removing invasive plants, installing native plants and tree protectors, and spreading mulch. These projects are great for groups. Snacks, tools, on-site supervision and environmental education provided. KCD Planners Set High Bar: Selected for Premiere State Leadership Program
KCD's Emmett Wild and Courtney Naumann, both Resource Planner IIs, have been selected to participate in the Washington AgForestry Leadership Program. Only 22 people from across the state were selected for this year’s class. The program offers Emmett and Courtney intensive coursework over 18 months to further advance their skills across natural resources management and policy. Congratulations Courtney and Emmett!
KCD Welcomes New Staff
Laura Redmond joined KCD as the Landowner Incentive Program Coordinator in July. She has a background in wildlife and natural resource conservation, management and research. With a B.S. in Wildlife Biology from the University of Montana, Missoula, she's an experienced field biologist and most recently coordinated a national cost-share conservation program for The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Having spent the past decade living between Montana and Colorado, Laura is excited to be living near the ocean again and to explore new mountain ranges and rivers in Washington.

Grace Porter is KCD’s newest Administrative Assistant. She is a seasoned administrative professional with over 20 years of experience of providing support to a variety of companies. She and her son both recently graduated from college while her daughter prepares to begin her college career in 2018. Grace recently moved here from the San Francisco bay area and dives into new projects and adventures with the personal motto of “Live each day to the fullest.”
