We all know that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but new research has zeroed in on the kinds of apples you want to pick, especially if you’re looking for specific health results.

With about 7,500 varieties of apples worldwide, we’ve all come to enjoy apple diversity with favorites from Fuji to Golden Delicious to Honeycrisp and beyond. But a recent study found that Granny Smith apples outshine all the others when it comes to gut health.

It turns out that these tart green globes contain the highest amount of non-digestible compounds, including fiber and polyphenols, which supports the growth of beneficial bacteria in your gut. The benefits are similar to eating sauerkraut or yogurt, or taking a probiotic supplement.

What’s more, these high-fiber apples also help stabilize blood sugar, making them a great choice for people with diabetes or anyone experiencing a low-blood sugar, jittery moment and needing a boost before their next meal. Granny Smiths are also a great way to naturally sweeten a juice or smoothie without spiking your blood sugar.

But before you go all Johnny Appleseed on us, remember that apples have been topping the Environmental Working Group’s annual dirty dozen list for the past five years. So make sure you pick organic green apples whenever possible and give them a good rinse before you bite in.
