When the morning alarm goes off, for many of us, our first thought is: coffee. If you’re one of those people that beelines straight for the beans, here’s how to make your cup of joe better for you with one simple addition: ground cinnamon.

While cinnamon certainly tastes and smells delicious, what makes it a real bonus in the a.m? It helps control blood sugar spikes, and therefore helps prevent that mid-day crash. Caffeine typically speeds up the rate at which your stomach empties after a meal, but components in cinnamon help slow down the process so sugar (glucose) won’t enter your bloodstream as quickly (spike avoided). It will enter eventually, though, and when it does, that cinnamon will come in handy again as it will help your cells better use the glucose for energy (preventing that spike yet again).

Just ½ a teaspoon of cinnamon is all you need to reap the benefits. You can add it to your ground beans pre-brewing or stir it into your cup no matter your drink of choice (espresso, latte, double foam cappuccino). Not making your own? Many coffee shops have ground cinnamon on hand—just ask.

Note: if you are stirring it into your cup, be sure to drink while hot. Otherwise, the cinnamon will settle at the bottom and taste … not so great.

Not a coffee drinker or you’re a coffee purist? You can still benefit. Add it to tea, Build-A-Breakfast, or just about anything you want to make taste (and smell) delicious while balancing your blood sugar.
