April 2020

The last time you received River Neighbors, we were already looking forward to the arrival of spring and the outdoor recreation season getting underway in full swing. Little did we know how drastically our world would change, and the closings and postponements that have become a necessary part of protecting our health. Many of TVA’s public recreation areas and facilities are closed for the duration of the quarantine, including a lot of campgrounds, visitor centers, swim beaches and more.

Like you, we are looking forward to reopening these areas, hopefully sooner rather than later. We are working daily with state and federal partners to make sure we do that safely, at the right time, after this health threat has passed. To learn more about TVA’s commitment, please visit:

It’s official: this was the rainiest first quarter in recorded history. The 24.61 inches in rainfall received from January through March 2020 was the most rainfall in the first three months of any year since this data started being recorded 131 years ago. The previous record was 23.95 inches, set way back in 1891. TVA’s River Operations has been managing all that water, taking actions that include spilling at all nine mainstem Tennessee River dams.

I can assure you that TVA remains on the job managing the river while following established safety and social distancing protocols. Expert staffers in Natural Resources, Environmental Compliance and more have been conducting necessary environmental safety measures including prescribed burns and land assessments. Like many of you, many of us are working from home or from alternate locations, but we’re on the job, and you can count on us to keep taking care of business.

Again, let me remind you to check for the latest information on closures and hazards. You can also follow us on our social media channels for quick updates.

But most of all, we urge you to comply with all safety directives and do not congregate in public areas. Please enjoy TVA-managed land, trails and lakes only while practicing guidelines for social distancing.

We want you to stay healthy and stay safe!
