Executive Director’s Report

The new year of 2020 is upon us with the promise of new opportunities every day to build God’s Kingdom. While much is being said about the clarity of 20/20 vision as it might be applied in this new year on the calendar, nothing could remain any clearer for us here at St. Christopher than continuing to fulfill our vision and mission of providing rest, restoration, and renewal to all of our guests.

One way in which we hope to do that before the end of this month is to complete the installation of a new play area for the youngest of our conference center guests. Through the generosity of a recently received bequest, Eve’s Fun Park will soon arise in the place of an aging climbing structure in the shaded area between the beach and Palmetto and Sea Oats Lodge buildings.

The structure being replaced has served us well for over three decades. It was a generous gift to St. Christopher from Britt and Doodle Lowry, given at the time of Britt’s retirement as the first full-time Executive Director of St. Christopher.

The new Eve’s Fun Park was made possible through the use of an unrestricted bequest received from the estate of Eve Kinloch Evans. The generosity of both the Lowry family and Eve Evans are blessings beyond measure because they were given to serve future generations, much like the initial bequest of the Morawetz family who gave the whole of Seabrook Island to serve the children of South Carolina.

Rejoice with us in the continuation of that legacy through the generosity of others, and please consider how you too might share in that opportunity to bless future generations through your own financial support of St. Christopher.

Blessings,

A Gingerbread Yule Party

The staff of St. Christopher gathered Dec. 20 for a party rich with homemade chili, a table full of deserts, and a competition of assembling gingerbread houses. Our Facilities Department planned the party, and Joe Galus made the chili.

Janet Galus holds her son, Jack, who is elated by spending time with Grinch as Santa (depicted by David Diaz).

This gingerbread assembly team included (clockwise) Dominick Washington, Clarissa Talton, Lisa Marrone, John Reinauer, Ginni Quisenberry, and Abbigail Stidham.

At the end of a timed competition, these four luscious examples of quality construction emerged.

Welcome, Epiphany Light

The Rev. Dr. Sandi Kerner, chaplain of The Prayer Center, led staff and guests in a celebration of Epiphany on Feb. 6 (see the banner image). The morning marked the staff’s return from its Christmas sabbath break.

After the service, staff and visitors snacked on King’s cake, a French pastry served during the season of Epiphany and the days before Lent.

The service included traditional Epiphany prayers and a rite of “chalking the doorways” of The Prayer Center with 20+C+M+B+20. The formula is bracketed by the new year, and its letters refer to Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, the Christian tradition’s names for the Magi. The letters also are short for Christus mansionem benedicat (Latin for “May Christ bless this house”).

A Prayer for St. Christopher

Heavenly Father,
Lord of all creation,
Have mercy on St. Christopher
and have mercy on our land.
Revive us, oh Lord,
wake us up to your Presence.
Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us
and let your glory fill this place,
that all may encounter You
and experience the depths of your
love and grace.
Let your kingdom come in power,
bring healing and wholeness

and in His holy name,
Amen.
