Hello, Clay-Lovers.

Here’s a reminder to some of you, and a shout-out to those of you who I met recently at the Ceramic Showcase in Portland in May, who expressed an interest in having a new learning experience with me.

Summer workshops and classes are beginning very soon in my Portland studio, and there are still spaces available in each of my offerings. Please have a careful look below at what might work for you, and contact me ASAP to register.

Carving Bas-relief Ceramic Sculpture

This is a carving workshop, open to students at all levels of experience. I use this technique for my current wall-mounted work, and it can also be applied to free-standing 3-D work. It’s fun, compelling, and meditative. Choose this workshop if you can maintain a spirit of adventure, knowing that your “magnum opus” may be a little further down the pike, post-workshop, as you practice and experiment with what you’ve learned during the weekend. Plan on leaving your judgments at the door, and entering with a willingness to experiment and play.

  • Date:     Saturday, July 30th through Monday, Aug. 1st
  • Time:    9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Cost:     $265 + $40 for materials, tools, and firings

Surface Techniques Using Terra Sigillata

This is not as esoteric as it sounds for some of you…It is the fired material I use on my work that’s quite different from glazing. It yields a soft, sensual gleam but is not glassy. It’s a low-fire medium, suitable only for indoors.

Some previous ceramics experience or past/current enrollment in Bas-Relief or Hand building Class will be helpful.

  • Date:   Friday, Aug. 5th through Sunday, Aug.7th
  • Time:   9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Cost:   $265 + $30 for materials and firings

Ceramic Hand-building Outside the Box *New

In this 3-day workshop we’ll experiment with time-honored hand-building techniques applied in unusual ways to arrive at some interesting artful objects. Suitable for folks at all levels who have a sense of adventure. I encourage you to arrive with a hunch about what you’d like to create, but not a tight plan, leaving room to invite spontaneity and follow the happy accident!

  • Date:    Friday, August 12th  through Sunday, August 14th
  • Time:     9:30 – 4:00 p.m. daily
  • Cost:    $265 + $40 for materials and firings
