Scholarship Awards (2019)

This year’s joint effort of UUCR and four other Reston-area religious congregations resulted in scholarship awards to seven high school seniors, five from Herndon H.S. and two from South Lakes H.S., at their honors assemblies on May 30. This was the 30th year students have benefited from gifts from the Jennifer Mitchell Memorial Fund; the fund was established to recognize graduating seniors who have attained a solid record of achievement despite economic, family, linguistic, or other difficulties that would have impeded less dedicated and determined students.

The following seniors at the two schools received scholarships (ranging from $1,100 to $2,000):

At Herndon High School (with intended major and college):

  • Dolly Berens, neuroscience at Virginia Tech
  • Melanie Castillo-Ponce, nursing at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC)
  • Jerusalem Eshete, nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Jean Carlos Quispe Arotinco, health sciences at NVCC
  • Samira Rahman, biochemistry and computer science at William & Mary

At South Lakes High School in Reston:

  • Bryan Viera Gomez, computer science at Marymount
  • Brenda Yanes, elementary education at NVCC

UUCR members contributed $3,400 to the fund in the April special collection; donors added $720 to the fund last summer in memory of Al Erickson; and the four other congregations (Good Shepherd Lutheran, St. Anne's Episcopal, St. John Neumann Catholic, and St. Thomas à Becket Catholic Churches) and individual donors provided an additional $7,500. The fund is named after Jennifer Mitchell (daughter of Terry and Linn Mitchell of the UUCR community), who was a Herndon H.S. senior when she died in an automobile accident in 1990.

The Social Action/Social Justice Committee here at UUCR appreciates the donations made by individuals and families from UUCR this year, as well as those from the other four religious communities and other “friends of the fund.”  Thanks to all!

Upcoming Art Exhibit - Artists in Exile: Art as Fabric for Healing

The Art & Aesthetics Committee is pleased to present Artists in Exile: Art as Fabric for Healing, featuring the work of Iraqi artists, for the July gallery exhibit. This show will run from July 1 - August 5.

Artists in Exile offers an opportunity to share in immigrant stories of Iraqi-Americans through paintings brought to us by Common Humanity. a non-profit organization based in New York which seeks to build understanding, respect and friendship with the Middle East and Muslim world.

Artists in Exile: Art as Fabric for Healing is on a national tour. This national tour serves to give a visual voice to the artists and to give those viewing the exhibit an opportunity to see their own common humanity with them. In a time of heighten suspicion of those who are different from us, the exhibit hopes to bridge the cultural gap.

You are invited to an Artists Reception on Sunday, July 14, from 11:30am - 1:30pm. Some of the artists will attend this reception.

Sanctuary Temperature on Sunday Mornings

It is very important that the temperature in the Sanctuary be managed carefully on Sundays in order to ensure the comfort and safety of all, especially the musicians and worship leaders.

Please do not adjust the temperature settings in the Sanctuary before, during or following worship service. This is a critical component of ensuring that the Sanctuary is kept cool enough for those conducting worship.

If you find that you dislike the flow of air or are too cold on the end of a row, you may wish to sit in an internal seat or next to the aisle. Alternatively, if you tend to prefer the flow of air, you may want to find a seat on the end of a row, next to the HVAC vent.

Thank you very much for your understanding and support of this.
