Houston chemicals company raises $357M, claims unicorn status - Link

  • Solugen, developer of plant-derived chemicals, raises $350 million - Link
    - Axios
  • Solugen raises $357 million to make chemicals from sugar, not petroleum - Link
    - CNBC

“Houston-based Solugen, a startup that specializes in combating carbon dioxide emitted during the production of chemicals, has hauled in $357 million in a Series C funding round. That amount eclipses the size of any Houston VC funding round this year or last year.

The Series C round lifts Solugen's pre-money valuation to $1.5 billion, according to the Axios news website. This gives Solugen "unicorn" status as a startup with a valuation of at least $1 billion.

Singapore-based GIC and Edinburgh, Scotland-based Baillie Gifford led the round, with participation from Temasek Holdings, affiliates of BlackRock, Carbon Direct Capital Management, Refactor Capital, and Fifty Years.

Since its founding in 2016, Solugen has raised more than $405 million in venture capital, according to Crunchbase.” - Innovation Map Houston’s Natalie Harms

  • Eventus closes on $30 million Series B funding round - Link
    - inForney.com

“Eventus Systems Inc. loves being in Austin, but its team is spread out globally. It's been that way from the start in 2015, making the pandemic-driven shift to remote work almost a non-factor as it has grown its team and boosted its revenue.

The local startup, which develops financial risk applications for capital markets, has about 20 of its 55 employees in Austin. Now, bolstered by a $30 million in series B funding announced on Sept. 8, Eventus Systems CEO Travis Schwab says he plans to roughly double the company's headcount over the next year.” - Austin Inno’s Brent Wistrom

[This is an important read about the current state of tech talent in Austin. As much as I like and respect the writer and founder of Austin Digital Jobs Lani Rosales, I disagree with the conclusion. I speak with three to five people moving to Austin every week. These are startup/mentor/investor types, not early career workers, but they are all telling me that jobs are available and Austin companies are starting to get to pay parity with SF and NYC. Austin is still a net gainer of tech talent, even if some people are thinking about moving out because of housing costs or traffic/remote work issues.]
