Houston’s Mercury Raising $125M Fourth Fund - Link

- Crunchbases’ Mary Ann Azevedo

“Houston-based Mercury Fund has raised $82 million for its fourth fund, Mercury Fund Ventures IV, for which it aims to raise a total of $125 million, according to a regulatory filing that PE Hub reported on Thursday.

Founded in 2005, Mercury Fund has $275 million under management (per its website) and has historically focused on investing in “middle America.” [or as they describe it, ‘Mid-continent].” - Mary Ann Azevedo

The Houston Chronicle does a deep dive on the Houston Startup Community

Andrea Lienfelder from the Houston Chronicle has a series of well-researched articles about the current issues in the Houston Startup. ecosystem. Full Disclosure: I was interviewed several times and had a few quotes in the two articles. There is some controversy about the tone, and especially about Ed Egan's OpEd but the general idea is that it questions the 'top-down' approach to building a startup community by formal and bureaucratic organizations.

I have long said publicly that Houston is about People, not Places so I strongly believe that the discussion around buildings and density is misplaced - and has been since the later days of the Houston Technology Center. The emphasis should be about older, successful entrepreneurs guiding early-stage entrepreneurs into new businesses and markets. We're seeing this happen with organizations like Station Houston, The Cannon, Capital Factory, Founders Institute, WeWork Labs, MassChallenge Houston, TMCx, and Plug and Play Tech Center all building mentor networks in Houston recently.

The best part of the articles are the discussions on the Houston Startup Facebook Group, especially the one started by long-time startup Houston entrepreneur, Misha Govshteyn about the necessity of a startup community at all. This is the thread that I hope everyone reads and embraces to really make a difference in the community. I want to emphatically say that I love Houston and still feel like I can support the city even though I don't live there now.
