Dear St. Joseph Catholic School Community,
It was our pleasure as a faculty and staff to welcome you all to this year’s Back to School Night. We had such a wonderful turnout, so thank you! I particularly appreciated your feedback shared with me on the note cards - your likelihood of recommending our school to another family and your thoughts on changes our school could make to increase your likelihood of suggesting St. Joe’s to others. We have been so encouraged as we’ve begun to consider the information that was shared. Please do continue spreading the word about St. Joe’s - we’d love to be sure that the gift of Catholic education at our school can be shared with as many students as possible.
For those of you unable to join us on Tuesday, we offered this handout as a reminder of the parent involvement commitments for the year. Share hours can be reported to us at school using the share hour form that you can find on the Forms & Publications page on our school website. There are also hard copies available in the school office.
Last week we put out a request for families to complete the Family Income Survey (sent home last Friday). Receiving this form from as many families as possible is critical in determining our eligibility for federal funding that may be available to us. If you’ve misplaced your form, you can download it here. We ask that it be returned by Wednesday, Sept. 21.
As I wrap up, I just wanted to give you an update on our annual student-parent-teacher conference scheduling for conferences in October. This year’s conference scheduling will be done online using a scheduling resource called Pick-a-Time. We will share more information in these coming weeks to help you understand this new process and how to register for these important meetings.

Family Sock Hop to be held on Friday, Sept. 23
Don’t miss out on next week’s Sock Hop to be held on Friday, Sept. 23! This is a fun, family event hosted by PTO. The event will be in Marian Hall from 6 to 8 pm. There will also be a pep rally at school that day. Kids can dress up in 50’s style so start shopping for poodle skirts and T-birds attire! Entering the school at dismissal & parking at the end of the day
The walk-up entrance for dismissal is through the small walking gate near the Grades 5-8 wing. Please do not enter from Highland Drive. We make this request so that families are never walking in the roadways that cars are using for entrance or exit. For those who use the drive-up pick-up lane, after picking up your child, if you’re going to remain in the area around the school, please park outside of the gated school campus. So we can lock the gates, we need to make sure that all cars have cleared the playground area and have exited to the streets.
Children’s Choir for St. Joseph Masses - Practices & Permission
The St. Joseph Children’s Choir, open to students in Grades 1-8, will perform at a Sunday Mass once every other month, including at Christmas and Easter.  It will also perform at our monthly all schools Masses. Middle School students who have an interest in cantoring will receive specific training and instruction to help prepare them for this important role in leading music at Mass.  These middle school students will have an opportunity to work toward cantoring for Sunday liturgies as well as All School Masses. Practice will be held on Wednesdays after schools. There will be practice next Wednesday. To sign up, please download this permission slip and return to school by Tuesday, Sept. 20.
Cub Scout Information Night - Monday, Sept. 19
Are you or your son interested in Cub Scouting? Boys from kindergarten to fourth Grade are invited to check out St. Joseph’s Cub Scout Pack 163 on Monday, Sept. 19th at 6:30 pm in the St. Joseph’s school cafeteria. Information on Cub Scouting will be provided. Adults will have the opportunity to meet the leaders of Pack 163 and learn more about the Scouting program. School Box Top Contest to begin next week
Our Fall Box Top Contest will begin next week and run through Oct. 17. Prizes will be awarded to the top student and top class the first week of November. Please make sure that each Box Top is labeled with the student’s first and last name, grade, and homeroom teacher; this is helpful in ensuring that the correct student and class get credit! Good luck and thank you for supporting this fundraiser for PTO!
WISE Volunteers to begin school visits next week
For those of you new to St. Joe’s, you may be unfamiliar with WISE. WISE is a character education program the school has used for a number of year now. As part of the program, our Grades 3-8 classrooms are visited by some retired or senior members of our school and parish community once a month to teach or reflect upon a specific character education focus pre-assigned to the class. This month’s theme is self-discipline.
Honors Assembly for Grades 7 & 8 from last year’s final trimester
We will recognize our middle school students who received honors at the end of the final trimester of 2015-2016 immediately following our prayer service on Monday, September 19th. We invite parents who are able to attend to join us to celebrate the academic accomplishments of our 7th and 8th grade students.
Annual vision screening dates set
Each year, we have a vision screening for all of our students. This year’s vision screening is set for Monday, Oct. 3, and Tuesday, Oct. 4. If you have any questions about the screening, please contact vice principal Anna Raineri at
Home-to-school communication with teachers & staff
Please be sure to note one of the additions to this year’s Parent-Student Handbook. We request that parents not call or text teachers or staff on their cell phones or home phones. If you wish to reach a teacher or staff member, please contact them by calling the school’s phone number (and leaving a message if necessary) or by sending an email to their address.
Upcoming VIRTUS Safe Environments in-person trainings - needed to volunteer at school
All parent volunteers need to be up to date with the Archdiocese of Seattle’s Safe Environments requirements before volunteering this year. This means that you’ve attended an in-person VIRTUS “Protecting God’s Children” and have a current background check on file. Background checks are required in the first year of volunteering and then each three years after the initial in-person training. An online refresher class is also required each three years after the initial training is completed.
Here’s a list of upcoming area classes. If you are not yet up to date with training requirements, please plan to attend a class so you will be able to volunteer, help out in the classroom, and drive on field trips:

Spirit Wear chair needed
Do you like to spread Cardinal spirit? Then this position is a great fit for you. Responsibilities include managing inventory, selling product during school events with the help of volunteers and exploring new items for inventory. If you are interested in this positon, please email Laura Ashton at
Morning walking for parents on the school track
PTO has coordinated morning track walking a couple days each week. Join us Monday and Thursday mornings from 8:45-9:15 am, rain or shine, to walk/run on the track. Please sign in at the front desk and then meet up on the track. We’ll have our first meet up on Monday, Sept. 19.
Recess volunteers needed for the year & training dates set
We’re still on the lookout for recess volunteers for this year. If you are free for the entire block of time between 11:05 am and 12:30 pm at least a few days a month and are interested in helping to be an extra set of eyes and ears at recess times, please let us know. Recess volunteer trainings will be on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 8:45 am and Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 5 pm. Both sessions will be held in the St. Ignatius Room in Marian Hall. Recess volunteer training is required for anyone wishing to volunteer in this capacity. Parent Auction Donation obligation deadline is October 1st
Please note that the deadline for your parent obligation of a new product valued at $75 or a check/cash payment for $75 is due no later than October 1st.  After October 1st the obligation increases to $150 cash or check only per your school contract.  If you have any questions, please call Peggy DiPrima at 360-696-2586, ext 1261.
Complete our income survey to increase St Joe’s eligibility for federal funding
Did you know that we may not be receiving all the federal money that’s available for us at St. Joe’s to help our students reach their fullest potential? The money that local districts allocate to area private schools to support student learning depends on a few different pieces of information, and one of them is the income of the families of the students we serve. We sent home an income survey with each family today, and we ask you to please consider participating so that we can seek out and receive the federal funding that’s available to our school. The form is also available here. Please return the form to your child’s teacher or to the office by Wednesday, Sept. 21.

Support the St. Joseph Catholic School Annual Fund
Last weekend marked the kick-off to this year’s St. Joseph Catholic School Annual Fund campaign. Materials were sent home with each family last week. In order to increase family participation to make our school more attractive in grant applications, we encourage all families to make a gift, even if it can only be a small one at this time. Your participation is a sign of your satisfaction with the school and a vote of confidence for the education your child is receiving.
