SI Report for the High Level Political Forum  

The High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development is taking place from Tuesday 9 July to Thursday 18 July. This years’ theme is Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality. SI compiled a report in advance of the HLPF 2019, Achieving SDG4 for Women and Girls’  which showcases SI's contribution to the SDGs.

The ‘Women, Water & Leadership’ Mwihoko Women Project in Nakuru County, Kenya has focused on increasing food security and water access for women farmers – a transformative programme that includes training and capacity building, the project is surpassing expectations and showing extraordinary progress, safe in the hands of a committed and ambitious team.

SI President's Appeal Project 
Rembitan, Lombok, Indonesia

Soroptimist clubs SI Jakarta and SI Kemang proposed 'Women, Water & Leadership' projects in Indonesia, and SI is delighted to bring you news on the progress of the Rembitan project, focusing on the Rebuk Satu village. The first WASH facilities – six toilets and one bathroom, has now been built, and work has begun on a further four WASH ‘blocks’, with the capacity building component of the project soon be underway.

SI President's Appeal Project 
WeWash, Bulgaria

‘WeWash’ is taking strides to combat the immediate water and sanitation issues faced by households in rural communities in Bulgaria. Phase one and two are now completed and the project is moving forward to Phase three, which will include supporting women and girls as they strive towards careers in the water sector, the completing of a model ecological sanitation system at a children’s centre, and the empowering of women community leaders to advocate and protect the rights of their communities.

Malaysia

'Clean Water for Rural Communities' is focused on facilitating access to water, organic farming and new careers for women and girls, with Phase one now completed. SI brings recent news and details of Phase two of the project, currently taking place in Sabah and Sarawak.

SI President Mariet Verhoef-Cohen

SI President Mariet Verhoef-Cohen has utilised her position as President of SI, and President of the Women For Water Partnership, to deliver the concluding remarks at ‘Thirsty for Change: Promoting a Gender-Responsive Approach to Achieve Water Security’ at the UNESCO International Water Conference in Paris. The SI President was also interviewed by news station ‘France 24’, discussing water as an entry point to women's empowerment.

Soroptimist International (SI) is delighted to announce the appointment of Ulla Elisabeth Madsen as the SI Assistant Director of Advocacy, for the next biennium 2020 – 2021. Ulla will work closely with the SI Director of Advocacy, Beverly Bucur, and the SI UN Representatives, in supporting and promoting the SI strategic plan, goals and objectives. Welcome!

The arguments for a convention to protect the rights of older persons point to existing gaps in human rights treaties and emphasise the need for a specific legal instrument for older persons, much like those for women (CEDAW), children (CRC), and persons with disabilities (CRPD). In an event organised by SI Club Zottegem, Zuid-Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium, SI President Mariet Verhoef-Cohen joined one hundred people from the Belgium Union, and was presented with a cheque for 5000 euro - a substantial donation to the SI President's Appeal, helping to bring about transformative change for women and girls.

SI of Odder, Denmark, is supporting the SI President's Appeal with a donation of € 6,900, to empower women farmers in Kenya to access education, purchase a water tank and purchase supplies for planting crops.
