Welcome to the March Issue of Global Voice

This month we catch up on the latest Soroptimist news from around the world and take a closer look at the 61st Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW61), which took place at the United Nations headquarters, New York, 13 – 24 March 2017. SI President, Yvonne Simpson led a delegation of more than eighty Soroptimists and in this month's Global Voice, we bring you news from New York and coverage of some of the events Soroptimist International was involved in.

SYRIA 'BACK TO SCHOOL'


In the past two years, SI has reported on the wonderful work of the Dutch Soroptimists and the Soroptimist/UNICEF project Syria ‘Back to School’. Thanks to their astonishing hard work, since 2014 they have collected more than €500,000.

SOROPTIMIST WINS DESIGN COMPETITION FOR NGO CSW61 HANDBOOK 


Soroptimist Villy Makou designed the cover for the NGO CSW61 Handbook, which was unveiled at the NGO Consultation Day. Here we talk to Villy to find out more about her design, and the inspiration behind her fresh and original artwork, which seized the judges attention, and won the 2017 cover design competition.

 BEV BUCUR ANNOUNCED AS SI DIRECTOR OF ADVOCACY

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. On this day SI President, Yvonne Simpson released a video message to Soroptimists across the world.

CSW61 OPENING THE DOOR TO ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT 

The SI parallel event, ‘Opening the Door to Economic Empowerment for Women and Girls’ took place on 15 March at CSW. Recognising that advancing women’s economic empowerment in the world of work is essential for achieving gender equality, this event took a closer look at each of the Soroptimist Federations and a variety of Soroptimist grassroot employment projects from around the world.

CSW61 TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP AND WOMEN IN WATER DIPLOMACY 

'Inclusive and Transformative Leadership for Women’s Economic Empowerment’ took place the morning of 17 March, and in the afternoon the focus switched to women and water, and the highly anticipated Side Event, ‘Women in Water Diplomacy as Key to Economic Empowerment'.

CSW61 DAYS FOR GIRLS - EVERY GIRL. EVERYWHERE. PERIOD.


Catch up with coverage from 16 March, which saw the parallel event 'It Starts With Safety: Adding Girls To The Global Agenda', plus an event organised by Days for Girls International, a grassroots non-profit, creating a more dignified, humane and sustainable world for girls.

NGO CONSULTATION DAY

12 March saw the Kaye Playhouse, Hunter College, New York, throw open its doors for the CSW61 NGO Consultation Day.

FUTURE LEADERS
13 March saw the parallel event ‘Future Leaders Economic Empowerment in the Changing International Work World', with SI UN Representative, Bette Levy. The event addressed the major challenges of college leavers, in particular, the high difficulty in finding employment in a chosen career.

OPENING CEREMONY
The Opening of CSW61 was held in the General Assembly Hall at the United Nations, New York, 13 March 2017. Read a blog from SI President, Yvonne Simpson.

INTERACTIVE PANEL
20 March, saw an interactive panel of five experts from national gender equality mechanisms, academia, civil society organisations and national statistical offices. This was followed by comments and questions from Member States and other stakeholders, including IDA Pat Black, Soroptimist International.

AGREED CONCLUSIONS
In a UN Women press release, 24 March, it was announced that: UN Member States have committed to ensure women’s full and equal participation and leadership in the economy, as well as women’s right to work and rights at work, as a vital step to achieving sustainable development. This strong pledge to women’s economic empowerment came at the closing of the 61st session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW61).
