November Newsletter

Dear Gonzaga Moms,

Fall is proving to be an emotional season at Gonzaga.  The outpouring of love in response to the tragic news of Kevin Clark’s (’11) passing was so powerful.  Thank you to all those who rallied around the Clark family during this very challenging time.  It is always difficult to say farewell to one of our own but the family drew strength from all those who supported them through prayer, food and loving thoughts.  Please continue to pray for all of the Clark family throughout the coming months, especial during the holidays.
Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we are thankful for so many moms. Eileen Wisor, Family Support Chair, who has been sending well-wishes and notes of concern and sympathy to many Gonzaga families.  Faculty Treat Chairs, Maria Cindea, Kristen Kilguss and their team of moms, that arrives before dawn to feed our faculty and staff.  Father McKenna Center ChairsErin Donovan, Morgean Hirt, Valerie Jopeck and Anne Ourand, who have organized the collection of sheets and pillowcases and purchasing blankets and pillows for the Hypothermia Unit.  They also have set up the meal signup for the months of November through March.  Thanks to all who have signed up already -- spaces are still available (click McKenna Center Meal Signup).  We are also very appreciative of all the families who supported the Bake Sale, which generated over $500 in profits for The Father McKenna Center!   If you missed the Bake Sale, you can still support The Father McKenna Center at the Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, November 13.  Hopefully everyone has received the beautiful invitation to join the GMC and Eagles' Wings at this annual mass.
Many thanks to all the families and friends of Gonzaga who have already given so generously to the annual gala, Nutcracker Suite on Eye Street, by donating their time, talents, and treasures.  The excitement is building for the biggest party and fundraiser of the year on December 3.  Kathy Kirvan, Andrea Mellado and Kimberly Notarianni, along with their teams of volunteers, have been working hard since the summer to create a spectacular night of celebration and festivities.  We have wonderful auction items (did someone say Hamilton tickets?) and the not to be missed Shed Band with our very own dads Scott McCaleb and Neil McGrail.  RSVP soon, since the Gala sells out each year.  Find out how to volunteer and join in the fun at Gonzaga Gala.  The next Gala decorating meeting will be Wednesday, November 9, at 5:30 pm right before the general meeting in the lower commons.
Many thanks to Andrea Courduvelis and Lisa Roeder, for providing hospitality for the Senior Family College Night for College Counseling and Susan Kiley and Shannon Seay for feeding the parents who attended Junior Family night.  They then joined forces to make sure everyone was feed at the Junior/Senior Financial Aid Night.  Our first quarter Parent Teacher Conferences were held last month, as well -- thank you Stacey Brown, Heidi Daniel and Jull Gatti for the delicious refreshments.  Also, thank you to Hazel Lychak and Sharon Persinski for providing a wonderful dinner to the faculty before the conferences.
Thanks go out to Kimberly Martin, Honora Precourt and Nancy Travis for continuing to coordinate the food and details for our GMC meetings.  All of these events extend our already busy days and the effort all these moms put into nourishing us is greatly appreciated.
YOU could win $25,000!
Time is running out!  Purchase a raffle ticket (or more) for $100 each.  Only 1,000 tickets can be sold, don’t miss this chance to support Gonzaga and win cash.  Winner will be announced at the Nutcracker Suite on Eye Street gala on December 3, 2016.  You need not be present, but you must buy a ticket, to win.
Let’s Get Together!
Our next GMC meeting is this Wednesday, November 9 at 6:30 pm. Father Planning will provide the blessing and an update on Eye Street and our speaker will be Peter Baggetta Director of Center for Academic Excellence.  Please remember to bring unused Christmas cards that can be used for our Christmas Cards and Treats service project on December 7 (the students receive a "treat" and write a Christmas card to local shut-ins and nursing home residents).
Get Involved
Remember that first visit to Eye Street?  Hopefully you were greeted by friendly, enthusiastic moms and dads who made your experience welcoming.  Open House is Sunday, November 20, from 10 am to 2 pm.  We are looking for some moms to come and be hostess to the perspective families.  Please consider volunteering for part of the day.

Are you good with computers?  Do you like to share information?  We are in need of a new Webmaster and Communications Officer for 2017 -2018.  Denise Siciliano and Irene Zaso both have seniors this year and will unfortunately be moving on.   We are in need of talented, organized people who like to be involved.  Both these jobs can both be learned but we need very dedicated people to share all that happens in the GMC.  Please consider nominating yourself or a talented friend for the two very important roles.  All nominations will open in January.
Spread Christmas Cheer
November 11 is the deadline to sign up for annual Adopt-a-Family program.  Each year, Gonzaga families coordinate with Campus Ministries to provide Christmas gifts for 35 or more needy families via the Adopt-a-Family program.  It is a wonderful way to bring Christmas cheer to our Gonzaga neighbors.  Can't adopt a whole family?  No problem, you can sign up for as many, or as few, people are you are able.  Get together a group of your family members, friends, teammates, or club families to support others in our community.
Upcoming Events
The GMC provides hospitality for many of the upcoming events; so if you would like to assist, please contact the Committee Chairs.  All Committee Chairs are listed in the back of the Gonzaga telephone directory and on the GMC website.
Thank you to Irene Zaso, Communications Chair, for her organization and talents in putting together this and all of our GMC Communications!
We look forward to seeing you on Eye Street!

Freshman Retreat

Gonzaga mothers play an important role in the success of this retreat, scheduled for the weekend of January 13-15, 2017. This is Martin Luther King weekend, and there are no classes on Friday.
This is a spiritual weekend for our freshman and a leadership opportunity for our upperclassmen.
During the retreat weekend in January, we are looking for food servers for the boys' meals and the freshman parents' supper on Friday night. Our need is always greatest on Friday afternoon/evening shifts when we have a quick turnover from feeding the boys, cleaning up and preparing to serve freshman parents. This is also a time when we have no freshman parents available to serve.
Freshman parents: please note that Friday evening you will be invited to take part in the retreat so please do not volunteer for this time slot. We also have openings for helpers on Saturday and Sunday - a great chance to see your sons or simply be a part of this great Gonzaga tradition.

McKenna Center Meals & Volunteers

Volunteer for this winter!

The McKenna Center operates in the basement of St. Aloysius Church year-round, providing food, counseling and emergency assistance to those in need.  From November 1 – March 31, the Center also provides overnight accommodations, a hot meal and a supportive environment to 20 men in the Hypothermia Program.  The goal of the program is to provide structure and skills to enable a man to move to either transitional or permanent housing at the end of the winter.

The Gonzaga Mothers Club provides dinners and volunteers who heat, serve, cleanup and eat with the center's residents while sharing conversations.
