GMC January Newsletter

Dear fellow Gonzaga Moms,
Happy New Year! I hope you and your families enjoyed a wonderful and joyful Christmas break and 2016 is off to a great start for you!  As a gift to you, this newsletter is being sent to all Gonzaga families for this month.

If you have not yet joined the Mothers Club, please consider joining this month. You will stay well-informed, and GMC members also receive a discounted price for Mother-Son Celebration reservations.  To join GMC, you can register and pay online: Join the GMC.  Mia DeWitt, Membership Chair, has been doing a great job this year, so please contact her at if you have any questions.

The Gonzaga Mothers Club has been busy the past two months, and since we do not schedule a December GMC meeting, here is a recap of our past events.  Thank you to Andrea Courduvelis, Harriet Winslow, Yvonne Shincovich, and Kristen Yohannan, our Class Liaisons for providing the hospitality for our Junior/Senior Parent Night on November 5.  The Mass of Thanksgiving on November 15 was planned and coordinated by Kasey Crowley, Lisa Gossart, and MaryBeth Powers.  Everyone enjoyed the beautiful Mass and lovely reception afterwards!  All collection proceeds from the Mass went directly to the Father McKenna Center. We are all so grateful to the Chairs for their hard work and planning.  Thank you also to the many wonderful moms who volunteered for the Gonzaga Open House on November 22.  It was great to see so many moms come to meet prospective students and families!

December 5th marked the beginning of Christmas celebrations at Gonzaga with our incredible Miracle on Eye Street Gala!   It was an amazing, festive celebration of our Gonzaga community, and we are truly grateful for the giving spirit of our families.  Many thanks to T. Barron and Ana Rivas-Beck, our amazing Gala Chairs, our entire Gala Committee, and everyone who volunteered, donated, and contributed to the Gala's success!  Remember to check the Gala website for few sign up parties with openings.
Thank you to Theresa Buckson for organizing last month’s very successful Christmas Cards and Treats.  Over 800 cards were prepared and delivered to local nursing home residents, and the boys enjoyed the vast assortment of goodies.  Kristen Allen served as the GMC's coordinator for Gonzaga's Adopt-a-Family Program, and we thank her and all in our Gonzaga community who helped make the holidays a little brighter for neighboring families and those from the Washington School for Girls.  Karen McGee helped us schedule a Vineyard Vines Shopping Day on December 13 to benefit the GMC, so thank you to her and everyone who shopped.
January 6 was the Gonzaga Business Network Career Fair, and we thank Chris Kelly who spoke to us at our October meeting about this event for Gonzaga graduates.  Thanks also to the moms who encouraged their sons to attend this worthwhile event.  Hazel Lychak and Sharon Persinski, who always know how to make our teachers feel like winners, hosted a PowerBall themed Faculty Treats breakfast on January 8!  Sophomore Liaisons, Susan Kiley and Shannon Saey, provided the hospitality for our Sophomore Parents Night on January 12 -- thank you!  Parent Teacher Conferences were held on January 13, with thanks to Beata Gierdalski and Alison Quatrini for providing snacks to the parents and to Sarah Feighery and Valarie Warburton for providing dinner to the teachers that evening.  This past weekend, January 15 - 17, was the special Freshman Retreat, where Annmarie Edwards and Marissa Valentine planned and coordinated meals for all of the retreatants, leaders, and staff all weekend. Thank you for leading this effort and all who volunteered.

Please join us for our January GMC Meeting this Wednesday, January 20 in the Jesuit Dining Room.  We will be begin our annual Call for Volunteers and Nominations for Positions on the GMC Executive Board and for GMC Committee and Event Chairs for next year. To learn more about the available positions, click here for descriptions. Volunteering with the GMC is a very fun and fulfilling way to serve our beloved school and to meet many other wonderful moms.  I think most people find serving to be an honor, so please consider volunteering yourself or recommending a friend. Jill Mote will provide us with an update on that process. Come kick-off the Men for Others Diaper Drive with our speaker, Corinne Cannon, founder of the D.C. Diaper Bank, a recent Harvey's Hero Honoree, and daughter of our own Mr. Rick Cannon (Gonzaga English teacher).

Father Planning will also give an update on happenings on campus and what to look forward to for the remainder of the school year.  The meeting will be in the Jesuit Dining Room (JDR) and our GMC Hospitality ChairsKristin Cunningham, Amy Ramirez, and Bernadette Walker, will provide wonderful food and drink to go along with the company of old and new friends. Remember to bring your donations for the Father McKenna Center and the Washington School for Girls, and if you can, please bring another Gonzaga mom!
Thank you to Irene ZasoCommunications Chair, for producing another informative newsletter, and at Wednesday's meeting, she will provide us with a Social Media Tutorial so that we can be sure to stay informed with emails, posts, and tweets.  I look forward to seeing you this Wednesday, January 20th 6:30pm Social, 7pm Meeting.  Please note that our meeting is in the JDR (Jesuit Dining Room) this month due to the GFC's Beer and Brat meeting.
Happy New Year and I look forward to a great 2016 with you!

Please encourage your son to participate! Sizes 4, 5 & 6 are particularly needed.  All diapers collected will be donated to the D.C. Diaper Bank which provides a monthly average of 75,000 diapers to 2,500 D.C. area families. The Founder and Executive Director, Corrine Cannon, is the daughter of Gonzaga's own Rick Cannon and created the Diaper Bank in 2010. This year our goal is 16,000.
If every family brings in one pack, we will meet this ambitious goal!

International Food Fair
April 13, 2016

Mark your Calendars for one of Gonzaga students' favorite events of the year
A day when Gonzaga students and faculty experience the diversity of our school community by enjoying delicious food from hundreds of countries.
Gonzaga Mothers Club volunteers organizing this event hope every Gonzaga family will continue the tradition of preparing a dish representing your family heritage or a favorite tradition and send it to school to share that day. At lunchtime, students and faculty will purchase wristbands that allow them to sample authentic dishes from around the world.
Proceeds from this event benefit the Modern Language Department.  Watch for signups to donate food and to volunteer will be coming soon.

Please contact co-chairs Jessica Koenig, Paige Melville, and Susan Yano at with questions regarding food donations and volunteer opportunities.
