GMC November Newsletter

GMC November Newsletter

Dear Fellow Gonzaga Moms,
November is a time of remembrance, and our school community began this month with the beautiful Mass of Remembrance at St. Al's on November 1, honoring all of those whom we have lost.  With the anniversary of last year's tragic accident, please keep those Gonzaga families in your prayers.  Another way to support these families is to attend or donate to the Inaugural Dominik Pettey '15 Memorial Purple-White Hockey Game on November 6 at Fort Dupont Ice Arena (details can be found here).
November is also the perfect time to be mindful of our blessings and to give thanks - and we are thankful for so many things!  Thank you to Anne Barsanti GriffithFamily Support Chair, for sending well-wishes and notes of concern and sympathy to many Gonzaga families so far this year.  Thanks to our McKenna Center ChairsMorgean Hirt, Joanna Hoffschneider, Valerie Jopeck, and Anne Ourand, for organizing the collection of sheets and pillowcases and purchasing blankets and pillows for the Hypothermia Unit.  They also have set up the meal signup for the months of November through March.  Thanks to all who have signed up already -- spaces are still available (click McKenna Center Meal Signup).  We are also very appreciative of all the families who supported the Bake Sale which generated $655 in profits for the McKenna Center!
Our sincere thanks to the many families and friends of Gonzaga who have already given so generously to the 2015 Christmas Gala, Miracle on Eye Street, by donating their time, talents, and treasures.  Everyone is preparing for and looking forward to our biggest party and fundraiser of the year on December 5.  T. Barron and Ana Rivas-Beck, along with their teams of volunteers, have been planning and arranging wonderful items that will be available for the auction and fashioning a spectacular night of celebration and festivities as we come together to support Gonzaga.  Please RSVP soon, since the Gala sells out each year, and find out about upcoming Gala meetings and how to volunteer and join in the fun at Gonzaga Gala.  The next General Gala meeting will be Tuesday, November 3, at 6:30 pm in the Jesuit Dining Room.
Many thanks to Andrea Courduvelis and Harriet Winslow, for providing hospitality for the Junior Family College Night for College Counseling.  Our first quarter Parent Teacher Conferences were held last month, as well -- thank you Beata Gierdalski and Alison Quatrini for the delicious refreshments.  Also, thank you to Sarah Feighery and Valerie Warburton for providing a wonderful dinner to the faculty before the conferences.
Thank you to Kristen Cunningham, Amy Ramirez, and Bernadette Walker for coordinating the food and details for our fun October GMC meeting.  Thank you also the Jill Mote for orchestrating the Chili dinner at the Joint GMC/GFC meeting, and thank you to the Executive Board members who made the delicious selections of chili -- JillTami Henneman, Kristen Allen, Teresa Smith, and Denise Siciliano.  Special thanks to our speakers, Chris Kelly from the Gonzaga Business Network and Eli Clarke from College Counseling for providing information and plans for life beyond Gonzaga.
For our November GMC meeting this Wednesday, November 4 at 6:30 pm, we will have Father Planning provide the blessing and an update on Eye Street.  Then our speaker will be Stephen NeillGonzaga's Senior VP of Advancement, and we will have the latest update on the Gala and all things related to the GMC for this month.  Please remember to bring to the meeting any donations of toiletries and pantry items for the McKenna Center, small gift items for the Washington School for Girls, and unused Christmas cards that can be used for our Christmas Cards and Treats service project on December 9 (the students receive a "treat" and write a Christmas card to local shut-ins and nursing home residents).
Another way to give this season is through our annual Adopt-a-Family program.  Each year, Gonzaga families coordinate with Campus Ministries to provide Christmas gifts for 35 or more needy families via the Adopt-a-Family program.  It is a wonderful way to bring Christmas cheer to our Gonzaga neighbors.  Can't adopt a whole family?  No problem, you can sign up for as many, or as few, people are you are able.  Get together a group of your family members, friends, teammates, or club families to support others in our community.  Please see the GMC website for details here or contact Kristen Allen or Carmen Fitzsimmons
Please try to attend the event tonight, on November 2, the Georgetown Visitation Parents' Association in partnership with the GMC will present "Parenting in the Digital Age: Helping Your Teens Navigate Their Digital Lives" featuring Yalda T Uhls, PhD, Child Psychologist, Expert on Media, Research & Kids and Author of “Media Moms & Digital Dads”.  Event will be at Visitation with Social at 6:30 pm and Presentation at 7 pm.  Please see information below for more information and to RSVP.
