The Village Alliance welcomes IBM and its newly-established Watson Group, who will be establishing headquarters at 51 Astor Place.  According to IBM, Watson is a cognitive computer system that will transform how organizations think, act, and operate in the future. Mayor Bill de Blasio has named Maria Torres-Springer as Commissioner of the Department of Small Business Services, pledging to deepen the agency's connections to neighborhoods across the five boroughs. As a public servant with deep expertise, Torres-Springer will establish a new revolving loan fund to help local businesses grow, expand outreach to immigrant-owned businesses, and help launch new economic development hubs in underserved communities. 

The NYC Economic Development Corporation just announced RISE : NYC (Resiliency Innovations for a Stronger Economy) a competition to identify and deploy new technologies to help small businesses become more resilient to future storms, sea level rise and other effects of climate change.  Up to $30 million will be awarded to install winning technologies at businesses throughout the City.
