Seeing the Right Signs to Save a Mother's Life:

The Right Decision Can Be a Difficult One

Rosa Ivania Arauz, age 24, was close to reaching the ninth month of her second pregnancy, when she was visited by the local health promoter, Juan de Dios Blandon. A farmer’s wife in the community of San José de La Mula, Matagalpa, Nicaragua, Rosa Ivania is a very humble woman, with a very basic school education, and very shy.

Life is hard in mountain communities like San José de la Mula. To walk to the nearest health centre would take her at least 3 hours, which is why women often choose to stay at home to deliver their babies. In remote rural communities, having access to hospital care during childbirth is often the difference between life and death for a mother and her newborn.

Dr. Laura traveled with the CORE Group in February to attend the Community Health Learning Trip at the Comprehensive Rural Health Project (CRHP) in Jamkhed, India.

“I learned that while we work in very different contexts (in India versus in Nicaragua),” says Dr. Laura, “the essence of community health is the same: love the people, learn from the people, and work alongside the people so that together we can make a difference to improve the health of the most vulnerable."
