Vancouver Volcanoes Hang On To Advance After Defeating Portland Chinooks 156-148
June 28, 2014 – Vancouver, WA – In front of an enthusiastic home crowd the Vancouver Volcanoes pulled out a victory after a hard fought comeback by the Portland Chinooks. The Volcanoes won 156-148 as IBL In The Game Watch List leader Andre Murray poured in 43 points.
Vancouver put together a solid first half in an offensive explosion, the team received well-rounded scoring efforts from their starters and went into the break with a 76-62 advantage. On the entire evening, Vancouver shot 63.6% from the field, and 53.6% from beyond the arc. Murray led all scorers, but Vancouver also enjoyed solid scoring efforts from Brian Morris (27 points), Dominique Watson (23 points), and Calvin Hampton (21 points).
Rookie Adam Herman chipped in with 14 points and veteran player Josh Tarver ended with 16 points for Vancouver. For the Chinooks, it was nearly a two-man operation as the team broke down a double-digit lead to single digits late in the contest. Kevin Ford and Antone Jarrell came up huge in the absence of former IBL All-Star Jared Cunningham. Ford finished with 41 points, and Jarrell wrapped things up with 38 points (8-for-12 3pt).
Vancouver and Portland end the 2014 "Battle of the Bridge" series 3-3, but Vancouver's win in the playoffs will certainly give them bragging rights heading into next season. Still, one of the IBL's best rivalries provided a highly entertaining game once again, and there will be plenty more to come as these two teams continue to do battle in the future.
Vancouver will head to the IBL championship game for a second straight year. After the emotional victory against Portland, the Volcanoes will have plenty of confidence as they get ready for the title game Sunday, June 29, 5:00 PM Pacific Time at Clark College.
