Vintage Essays By Judy Williamson, Director of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center at Purdue University Calumnet

Dear Readers,

Examining the concept of freedom causes one to first consider what enslaves a person. One definition of enslavement is one person being "owned" by another. This loss of personal freedom still exists today, however a more common form is the power of enslavement that we ourselves provide to objects that reign over us in our homes and at work. The care and feeding of possessions can cause them to own us rather than vice versa. Consider whether the objects you own service you or enslave you and you will begin to comprehend that those individuals who are the most free understand how accumulating possessions can put one in a caregiver's role.

As a custodian a person is put in charge of something that they look after. Whether it's a child, building, financial securities, or a collection of some type, a custodian is accountable for their charge. Over the years, collections accumulate and the joy in acquiring can quickly turn into the task of care giving. Somewhere in the transition the freedom of body and mind are abdicated for a choice freely made.

The things that bind us control us. Through choices made, a person exchanges one opportunity for another. To be free really means to be in control of choices and their outcomes. Collecting can lead to hoarding. Movement relieves stagnation, and circulation keeps the life blood flowing in our bodies. Energy that is circulated empowers. Movement relieves inertia. Life improves with positive choices made that are selective and predispose one to good outcomes.

So, in order to be free in body and mind it is necessary to freely make and execute good choices - one at a time. These baby steps toward self-actualization lead us to more empowered end results. Knowing what to do and then doing it, heightens our awareness about the freedoms we can and do control. Freedom is not a "given," rather it is a "right" that we earn one positive choice at a time. Membership in a free society is not an entitlement but rather an earned privilege. If you have this "golden" opportunity, remember to not leave home without it! Circulate the idea, and empower yourself and those around you. True freedom comes with accountability to both yourself and others. Let it motivate you to becoming the person you envision.

Hill exclaims: "If you have the power to advance . . . if you are certain that you can have a better future, you'll never surrender your birthright of freedom."

Be Your Very Best Always,
Judy Williamson

The Law of Success

The Desire for Freedom of Body and Mind
By Napoleon Hill

The desire for freedom of body and mind. The basic wish in everyone's heart is the desire to be free and unfettered. Ask the average man you meet and he will tell you that someday he's "going to be his own boss and nobody is going to tell him what to do." This elementary expression of a basic urge does not go beyond a mere idle wish in most cases, and sometimes it is just plain laziness that prompts it, rather than a definite desire to be free. In fact, working for oneself does not necessarily mean freedom. There are men who own their own businesses who work early and late to make ends meet while their employees work their eight hours and go home. But these are unusual situations. It is true that owning your own business is one way to be self-determining. This great country of ours affords more opportunities for personal freedom than anywhere else in the world. It is up to the individual to take advantage of the opportunity by having a definite idea of what he wants which will make him free, and a definite plan by which he can obtain his purpose. Freedom of body and mind requires very careful planning to achieve and "few there be that find it." Many persons, even with money, bind themselves to too many things and fail to be really free.

As long as you are willing to let life push you around, it will.

Notes

"The World Inside Your Head is Bigger than the World Outside Your Head"

By Rev. Dr. Sam Boys

Sam Boys

This statement holds true - and can be seen as an asset or a liability depending on where we choose to fix our attention. As with everything Dr. Hill teaches us, it involves our conscious choice - our initiative. We can allow the thoughts in our head to benefit us in many ways: visualizing our definite purpose, employing controlled attention, letting our imagination guide us into new ideas, new concepts, new inventions. Or, like a garden, if our mind is left untended, it will yield weeds that run wild, and the world inside our head becomes a roadblock: negative self-talk, worry, fear. Again, where we choose to focus our awareness will allow us to remain "free and unfettered," or shackled in a prison of our own making.

We are in the driver's seat. We are the consciousness that drives the vehicle. As we think - so we are. Our mind can literally create our reality. Here's the flow: thoughts create emotions, and emotions have a biochemical response in the body which manifest physically. These universal truths have echoed through the centuries, articulated by Dr. Hill, and his contemporaries, like philosopher James Allen, who said, "The body is the servant of the mind. It obeys the operations of the mind, whether they be deliberately chosen or automatically expressed. At the bidding of unhealthy thoughts the body sinks rapidly into disease and decay; at the command of glad and beautiful thoughts it becomes clothed with youthfulness and beauty."

If we want to renew our body - we must beautify our mind. Because thought is the fountain of action - from which all flows. These simple truths remind us that true freedom is to see the body and the mind as one. Our mind cannot feel calm if our body is out of balance, and vice versa. Often the body and the mind are at odds with each other, and for many of us, this is the root of our suffering. We can bring about more freedom in our lives by bringing the body and mind back into balance. There are many techniques and practices that can help do this, and I encourage anyone who wants to pursue freedom of mind and body to find one that will help you to bring the body and the mind into harmony with each other.

Once we learn to manage out inner state - then we can really learn to make good choices in our life, and this can impact our relationships, our work, our family, and ultimately our relationship with ourselves. The more we employ these body-mind techniques and practices, the more we will be able to handle life's stressors without being overwhelmed. We can't always change the way things are on the outside, but when we change our inner world - we experience our outer world differently. Truly free and unfettered.

Rev. Dr. Sam Boys is Associate Professor of Philosophy & Religion at Ancilla College in Donaldson, Indiana. He is also a published author, musician and you instructor. His recently released CD, "Breathing Meditations and Healing Sounds" focuses on wellness in mind, body, and spirit. It is now available for download online.

Outwitting the Devil by Napoleon Hill Napoleon Hill's Road To Success Empowered Millionaire The Little Book of Leadership

Outwitting the Devil

By: Napoleon Hill

Napoleon Hill wrote this book in 1938, just after publication of his all-time bestseller, Think and Grow Rich. This powerful tale has never been published, considered too controversial by his family and friends.

Using his legendary ability to get to the root of human potential, Napoleon Hill digs deep to identify the greatest obstacles we face in reaching personal goals: fear, procrastination, anger, and jealousy, as tools of the Devil. These hidden methods of control can lead us to ruin, and Hill reveals the seven principles of good that will allow us to triumph over them and succeed. Annotated and edited for a contemporary audience by Rich Dad, Poor Dad and Three Feet from Gold co-author Sharon Lechter, this book is profound, powerful, resonant, and rich with insight.

Hill wrote a series of fifteen articles he titled Billboards on the Road to Success. The articles in Napoleon Hill's Road to Success are exactly as Hill typed them on his old manual typewriter. The articles written more than ninety years ago are as relevant today as when Hill penned them.

The book you are about to read will provide you with valuable writings on success before Hill published his first book. Remember it was 1908 when Hill interviewed Andrew Carnegie, but twenty years before he published his first book. During this twenty year period Hill was writing, speaking, teaching classes on the principles, and publishing his own magazine. Hill published Napoleon Hill's Magazine and Napoleon Hill's Golden Rule Magazine. Articles from these magazines compose the book you are holding and give valuable insight to some of Hill's earliest writings, whether you are a reader of Hill's famous works or this is your first time of reading Hill's writings, you will gain valuable insight that will help you in life.
