Karla Arias came to the United States at 17 when her mom decided to immigrate to San Diego from Mexico. She took the opportunity to immerse herself in the English-speaking culture.

Moving Forward and Looking Back

The SDCE cohort of 2017 Promise Students met on June 28, 2017 at the North City campus to participate in the SDCE Promise Luncheon hosted by the President. Approximately 75 students, faculty, and staff attended the event and were greeted by SDCE administrators who also shared words of wisdom. Additionally, SDCE Promise students from the 2016 cohort returned to share their experiences and gave advice to this years’ winners regarding what to expect in the coming year and tips for being successful. Integrated Planning Summit

San Diego Continuing Education’s (SDCE's) first of three scheduled Integrated Planning Summit meetings was held June 22 at North City Campus. Over 50 faculty, staff and administrators participated in eight workgroups that each shared ideas on how we can improve and integrate ideas and thoughts that align with SDCE's current institutional goals for Basic Skills, Student Equity and Student Success. The next summit meeting will be July 19, 1:00-4:00 at North City Campus. All are welcome.

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

Partnership Resource Team Announced

Big news coming out of the Office of institutional Effectiveness! The Institutional Effectiveness Partnership initiative (IEPI) run out of the State’s Chancellor’s Office, has formed the Partnership Resource Team (PRT) visiting SDCE in the fall to assist of the development of an Innovation and Effectiveness plan that will then be provided seed money (up to $200K) for the implementation of that plan. What would my family’s lives have been like if not for the San Diego Continuing Education classes they took after we moved to the US from Russia when I was a baby? I have no idea. My whole life, I always knew the name of their beloved ESL instructor—Raul Martinez. But it wasn’t until about 25 years later when I started working at SDCE and taking our classes myself that I understood how many other people had benefited the way my parents did when they turned to Continuing Education classes to learn new skills, start over in a new career and country, go after their goals, and find community. SDCE’s new Classified STAR (Staff Training and Retention Conference) was a huge success. More than 70 people participated in the programming, which included an opening session with various workshop choices based on individual areas of interest at work and at home. A new onboarding program was also introduced. More


The San Diego Adult Education Regional Consortium (SDAERC) is pleased to announce that Andrea Vinson from San Diego Unified ALBA Community Day School will replace Marc Guttoso as the San Diego Unified manager appointed to the SDAERC Board. Andrea has already proven to be a valuable asset, availing herself immediately to participate in the screening and interviewing process for the 2017-2018 SDAERC Director. The search concluded last week with Kay Faulconer Boger accepting the position. Kay will be signing her year long consultant contract with SDAERC on Friday July 14, 2017 and will perform the scope of work previously fulfilled by Susan Yamate.


Please note these important changes for SDCE Fall 2017 Flex Days: August 30, 31 & Sept. 1, 2017

  • 8/30: morning general sessions TBA/AFT meeting with lunch at ECC, 12-1:30pm; afternoon and evening sessions TBA
  • 8/31- Convocation Day at ECC: Registration and continental breakfast opens at 8am with presentations and speakers starting at 9am, followed by President’s lunch, afternoon program meetings and sessions and evening recap session
  • 9/1: morning general sessions TBA at ECC, 9am-12:15pm

    Faculty Flex Online registration opens 8/18. Go to SDCE Flex after that date
