Weather-wise, we have enjoyed a beautiful summer and fall in New Brunswick. Our eastern maritime climate has once again spared us from the drought and forest fires that have caused widespread damage and some devastation in western Canada and USA. It is not surprising that the Maritimes is getting increasing attention as a great place to live, work, raise a family, and retire to. Hopefully we can get COVID-19 under control in the near future, then get our focus back to more normal activity.

Based upon the (temporarily) improved COVID-19 situation this past summer, your ARPFNB Executive Committee planned “Meet & Greet BBQs” for Forestry Students and ARPFNB members at each of UNB and UdeM. We were able to host the UNB event in Fredericton on September 28th, but unfortunately we decided to postpone the UdeM Edmundston event that was scheduled for October 5th, due to the rapidly worsening COVID numbers. Our Fredericton event was well attended (more than 70 Forestry students and more than 10 ARPFNB members) with lots of good discussion. We used this opportunity to ask the students to complete a survey, in which many students expressed strong interest in site visits and chances to network with practicing professional foresters. We will plan some site visits and additional networking opportunities to occur once COVID restrictions ease. STAY TUNED.

On the “Right to Practice” front, our joint ARPFNB-NBFTA committee has only met once since our respective Annual General Meetings. The NBFTA representatives have been meeting on their own to discuss the proposed legislation and to work through their issues and concerns. We are hopeful and optimistic that our joint committee will soon resume meeting and working collaboratively to further improve the legislation, and to develop proposed By-Laws. We hope to schedule a “Right to Practice Update - Q&A Zoom Session” for all interested ARPFNB and NBFTA members early in 2022 (before our next AGM).

Our Association’s fiscal situation is good. Our membership numbers are increasing slightly each year. The only area where we are falling behind is our Scholarship Donations. We rely largely on our Life Members to support our scholarship fund in lieu of paying membership dues. To date in 2021, we have raised less than 50% of the $4000. In scholarships we award annually to forestry students attending New Brunswick universities. I urge our Life members to consider making a tax-deductible donation to our scholarship fund.

We are just a few short months away from the end of 2021. We will be looking for members to serve on the ARPFNB Executive and other committees. Please consider volunteering. If you have an interest, send the Association a short email (info@arpfnb.ca) and we will assist you with the nomination process.

We are also looking for award nominations: if you know of a worthy candidate for the “New Brunswick Forestry Hall of Fame”, or the “Professional Forester Achievement Award” or the “Young Forester Achievement Award”; please let us know.

THANK YOU.

- Blake Brunsdon, RPF
