“Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we are supposed to be and embracing who we are.”
Brené Brown

I've found myself thinking about this so many times over the past couple of weeks. What is it? Where do you find it. How do you know?

In advertising when something or someone ISN'T authentic - you know it. With art - how do you know?

Once while visiting a major museum I saw a canvas painted entirely flat olive green. It had a veeeery long statement about a dragon and samurai and full of art-speak. I love introspection and abstract art and minimalism. But my personal gut reaction to this work was skepticism. I wondered if he was secretly laughing that people actually paid a huge price for this work.

That probably says more about my reaction to the old-school gatekeeping of the museum curatorial world than about the artist because who knows, he might have been entirely sincere, entirely authentic to his personal vision. How am I to know?

Do you trust your own voice as an artist?

“I cannot say this too strongly: Do not compare yourselves to others. Be true to who you are, and continue to learn with all your might.”
Daisaku Ikeda

Thinking about this reminds me that the only one that can judge if your work is authentic to YOUR vision as an artist is YOU.

Each person that sees your work will have their own reaction to it. That will always be beyond your control. Remember that their reaction is more about their own views than it is about your work.

Don't ever let the opinion of other people dictate what you create.

My advice? It's fine to listen to the criticism and suggestions from others, but YOU are the only one who can choose if they are nourishing to you as an artist. You are the one who gets to choose whether to swallow those opinions of others or spit them out.
You've got this. I know you do.
Learning to trust your own vision and to clearly communicate with your own voice as an artist is an experience that can change your art practice forever.

Hudson River Valley Art Workshops
Please join me for this week long retreat. We will explore surface design, mark making and delve deeply into clarifying your own unique vision and honing your artist's voice.

When I teach I never tell my students what they should do. I ask question after question, letting the student dig deep to find the answer that is right for them.

Here are two more reasons to join me for this retreat.

It is SO MUCH FUN to stay in a place where the work studio is right downstairs and open 24/7.  It is absolutely delightful to spend a week with nothing to worry about except growing yourself as an artist!
