“When I attempt anything, I have a passionate determination
to overcome every obstacle.”
Cecilia Beaux

Who is talking inside your head?

Have you seen the cartoons with a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other? Do you hear them whispering to you when you are making art? Is this voice your own or does it sound like someone from your past? Which one speaks up most often, the angel or the devil?

"I've been absolutely terrified every moment of my life - and I've never let it keep me from doing a single thing I wanted to do." -Georgia O'Keeffe

Sometimes during class my students say "I failed, I can't" or "this is horrible." I can only imagine what else is going on in their mind. It breaks my heart just a little, wondering who criticized them and filled their mind with these negative thoughts.

If you've got a nasty little shoulder devil whispering things into your mind that shake your confidence, I'd like you to do this little exercise with me. Picture that little devil. Who does it look like? Now picture yourself as a loving, confident adult. Imagine yourself wondering what your criticizer must have experienced in order to become so unhappy that they needed to crush your joy. Give them a hug, walk them to the door and out into a lovely forest, then send them on a journey through the woods. Imagine them finding peace and never coming back to haunt your shoulder again.

If your shoulder devil was abusive, show them into the back shed, shut the door and nail it shut. I mean, nail it shut forever!

This and other original artworks are available for sale at

Now picture your shoulder angel.
What does it look like?

I picture mine as a miniature dragon!
Send me a sketch of yours and I'll send you a sketch of mine.

Art-making is a journey. Neither you nor I will ever actually set foot on the North Star that guides our vision, but if we keep climbing, keep working, keep exploring, we will grow and become something bigger than we could have imagined. And we will climb. Oh, will we climb mountains!

Replace that negative voice with confidence building mantras that you can repeat to yourself as often as you need them.

Isn't turning out like you wanted?
"I wonder what unexplored idea I can follow here?"
Made a mistake?
"What can I learn from this?"
Having trouble with a technique or skill?
"I need more time to practice this."
Your outcome doesn't match your vision?
"My vision is way up there, I have room to grow!"

What will your shoulder angel say to encourage you today?

An Invitation

I have a very special opportunity for you.
I want to help you overcome the agony of indecision and self doubt and vanquish that shoulder devil for good.

Please join me for a week-long transformative retreat at the historic Hudson River Valley School in the picturesque region of upstate New York.
