Service Regional Outing

The Region 5 Service Regional Outing (SRO) is an annual event hosted for members to give back to the community and learn team building skills that help them grow as the future leaders and innovators in STEM. 

Registration includes a SHPE event shirt, dinner, and lunch. The Day 1 agenda will involve a local community outreach group volunteer activity at local animal shelte or Dallas homeless shelter followed by a formal dinner and salsa. Day 2 will conclude with an athletic tournament and lunch.

Engineers Are Really Superheroes! (3-6 graders)
Every wonder who makes what? Learn just some of the different types of engineering; so come find out how to build your next Ironman suit, Batman gadgets, or the next Rocket to Mars!

A Day in the Life of an Engineer (6-12 graders)
How engineers everyday life affects everyone around the world!

We will also be hosting a SHPE DFW Info Table!
Come talk to the kids and parents about SHPE and help encourage STEM!
Share your story - they can't be what they can't see!

Regional Leadership Development Conference
RLDC 2016

Region 5 provides Regional Leadership Development Conferences on a yearly basis for the leadership of SHPE student and professional chapters to improve their organizational, managerial, and technical skills. 

The program helps members develop and improve their pre-college outreach programs and improve the infrastructure of SHPE chapters especially for those who were not able to attend National Conference. Workshops, social events, luncheons, a banquet and a career fair are all planned by a Region 5 student and professional chapter collaboration/committee. 

This year, RLDC5 2016 will be hosted by the University of Houston and the Houston Professional chapters in Houston, Texas.

Speakers will make three 30 minute presentations to three different classes.The 30 minutes include question and answer session.
Speakers are asked to present meaningful and interesting information regarding your career so that students will be better able to make informed decision about their future career paths.

Teachers will sign up for a time that an engineer can visit their classroom
Engineers will provide the times they can come 
Each classroom is equipped with projectors therefore allowing opportunity for PowerPoint presentations

The brand new STEAM Middle School in Dallas just opened their doors Fall 2015 to 6th graders and have already created a Robotics team that have been competing! 
As this is a Title 1, majority Minority school - SHPE DFW is proud to be supporting this school and its mission.

Community Information
Dallas ISD's Public School Choice
Have you heard about Dallas ISD's Public School Choice? Transformation Schools offer students the opportunity to attend a campus that "best-fit" their individual interest and learning style. With specialized academic programming, similar to Magnet Schools, Transformation Schools do not have an academic requirement for placement. Transportation will also be made available. 
The admission window for applying to the district's Transformation Schools: Eduardo Mata; Solar Prep School for Girls; IDEA at Fannin and D.A. Hulcy STEAM Middle School is open. 
Selection into any Transformation School for the 2016-17 school year requires a completed application and proof of residency form for a non-DISD student submitted by January 29, 2016 at 6:00 P.M.
You can apply online here or by picking up and returning the completed application to one of the following locations and times. 
  • D.A. Hulcy STEAM Middle School: 9339 S. Polk Street, 8:00 A.M. - 3 P.M.
  • Eduardo Mata Elementary School, a Montessori Campus: 7420 La Vista Drive, 8:00- 3 P.M.

SHPE DFW had the opportunity to be part of STEAM Night/Parent Night at D.A. Hulcy Steam Middle School. There students and parents were able to engage in hands-on STEAM activities where they learned about what actually STEAM is. Students also had the opportunity to discuss and display projects from the semester to parents and community members.
