Dear Neuro Challenge Friends,
My newsletter article this month discusses the concept of Hope. Which I thought was fitting since Cause 4 Hope, Neuro Challenge Foundation's annual gala is coming up February 17th. Hope can be described as a strong feeling or desire towards a particular outcome. It is embedded into everyday life, from small wishes such as I hope the weather is nice today to hopes with bigger consequences, such as I hope my doctor’s appointment goes well.
Many psychologists consider hope to be one of the more consequential emotions when it comes to well-being and life satisfaction. Being hopeful about your health is a positive emotion, whereas hopelessness is often associated with sadness and even despair. At Neuro Challenge our goal is to focus on hopefulness, while recognizing that hopelessness is a very real emotion for people with Parkinson’s.
Hope is something you can teach yourself using a three-pronged approach. First, set a goal. Goals are transformative in directing hope. So, let’s say your goal is to walk 30-minutes a day, 6 days per week. The next step is to create a pathway to achieving your goal. The pathway is essentially your plan for achieving the goal and should also include how to overcome obstacles that may emerge. Having multiple pathways for the contingencies will make the goal more achievable. For instance, using walking as our goal, your first pathway may include walking in nice weather, but what is your plan if the weather is inclement? Do you do an exercise tape at home instead or walk at the mall? Regardless, you need to establish a few pathways. And the final prong is having a ‘Can Do’ attitude. You must have a sense of self-belief and trust in your pathways to ensure you have the motivation to achieve your goals. The three-pronged approach has been theorized to facilitate you taking more control of your emotions and to increase your chances of staying in a hopeful state-of-mind.
When I reflect on Hope I can’t help but think of our Cause 4 Hope gala Keynote Speaker, John Cullen. John is the founder of It’s Just Parkinson’s and created a movie by the same title which addresses John’s journey of living with Parkinson’s. John is someone that has experienced the dark days of the disease but has chosen to be a Parkinson’s warrior. At Cause 4 Hope you will hear John’s approach to managing his disease, his struggles and how he manages to stay hopeful.
If you haven’t purchased your tickets for Cause 4 Hope please do so soon. You can get more details here.
If you are struggling with managing your Parkinson’s and are encountering feelings of hopelessness, please reach out to a Neuro Challenge Foundation Care Advisor today. You can reach them at 941-926-6413. They are here for you whenever you need them.
