Siobhan Bryar, parent and campaigner
Siobhan Bryar is an inspiration to parents, who are increasingly being faced with having to fight to save their child’s vital respite services.
When London’s Ealing Council decided to close Heller House, a respite centre in Southall, West London for 10 to 18 year-olds with special needs, Siobhan hit back.
She started a petition that collected a whopping 12,000 signatures using the website.
Siobhan and other parents were understandably angry as many of their children, touched by autism, were being sent off to other boroughs. Siobhan campaigned for Ealing to consider selling off part of the site to a private developer, so that money could be raised for a new respite centre.
Now, families in Ealing are celebrating after their battle saw plans unveiled for a £1.5 million purpose-built facility earmarked for Northfields, Ealing.
Siobhan, whose 22 year-old guitar tutor son Laurence (pictured with her) is on the autism spectrum, hopes the victory will inspire vulnerable families around the UK to challenge council cuts.
Read about her battle and other fights against cuts in respite services in the current issue of Autism Eye Magazine.
