Welcome to our last newsletter before Christmas. We have a few new titles and lots of recommendations for gifts – for yourself or someone else.

New Titles

We have been selling Josef Hoflehner titles published by his own company, Most Press, for many years. Now Te Neues has caught on to his work and have issued a major Retrospective 1975-2015 which covers his work in Iceland, the USA, China, Antarctica and elsewhere. Sample images.  We have signed copies of many of his earlier works in stock as well.

Mack Books have had another great year and are promising to squeeze in two more publications before Christmas. Broomberg and Chanarin’s Spirit is a Bone contains a series of portraits, which include Pussy Riot member Yekaterina Samutsevic and many other Moscow citizens, created by a machine: a facial recognition system recently developed in Moscow for public security and border control surveillance. Co-opting this device, Broomberg & Chanarin have constructed their own taxonomy of portraits in contemporary Russia. Sample images.

Hanezawa Garden is Anders Edstrom’s documentation of a much-loved walled garden in Tokyo before it was demolished by the real estate developer Mitsubishi Estate in 2012, despite countless attempts by local residents to preserve it. Edstrom’s attention is drawn to strange and peripheral details rather than the obvious beauty: garden huts with smeared panes, a sealed cardboard box lingering on a sill, or the receding body of a workman. Sample images.

We will soon has signed copies of a major new collection of Daido Moriyama’s black-and-white work, Dog and Meshtights. “Most of what is depicted here are things that quietly exist on streets, walls and roadsides in the city without attracting much attention.”All photographs are vertical and – for the first time in one of Moriyama’s publications – are dated and appear in chronological order. Sample images. There will also be a limited edition of 150 copies with a choice of five prints.

Gift Recommendations

We have signed copies of Songbook, Gathered Leaves, The Whiteness of the Whale, I Went to the Worst of Bars and Koan – don’t expect them to be available much longer. Indeed it is likely that Gathered Leaves will be out of print soon and Mack have said it will not be reprinted.
