College Student Registration

How do College Students register to vote in Virginia?

A college student registers to vote in Virginia the same as any other applicant: every prospective voter must submit a voter registration application. Remember, you must update your voter registration information whenever you change your residence.  Every voter in Virginia must submit their residential address when registering to vote (a post office box cannot serve as a residential address). If you are unable to receive mail at your address, you must also submit a local mailing address. A dormitory or college address can be an acceptable residential address and does not disqualify you from voting.

What is my residence?

A prospective voter must be a resident of the Commonwealth and of the precinct where he seeks to register. In order to establish “residency,” a prospective voter must have a physical location where they intend to stay for an unlimited time. A person can have residency in only one place at a time.  The applicant must determine and declare their residence and may change their intent at any time.

How do College Students vote?

A college student votes in the same manner as any other registered voter: you may vote in person on Election Day or, if eligible, by absentee.

Students who will be absent from the locality where they are registered to vote because they attend school in another locality are eligible to vote absentee.

For complete information on voting, please go to: http://www.elections.virginia.gov/

Volunteers Needed

The photos will help to provide much-needed visual interest to our new website, social media and handouts. Please contact communications@vbdemocrats.org.

We are also in need of volunteers to assist with Event Planning. Please contact treasurer@vbdemocrats.org.

Advocating For Change with Finite Energy and 180 Minutes a Week
~ by S. Martin

I am tired. I bet you are, too. We all only have 24 hours in day. We all only have 1,440 minutes each and every day. I have two children, two jobs, a hobby business, a yard that needs mowing, plants that need pruning, and carpets that need vacuuming. (I swear Virginia Beach could save a lot of money on sand replenishment...

Sandra BrandtMonday, July 10th, 2017 Meeting  ~ Special Presentation
Politics and political parties can be confusing, especially for the many new activists who have questions about the Democratic Party and how they fit into the bigger picture. Sandra Brandt, Chair of the Second Congressional District and one of our DPVA leaders, will give a fast-paced presentation on the structure and functions of the 2017 Democratic Party, describing the national, state and local levels, our legal obligations and how VBDC relates to the larger Democratic Party. This is an informative program, especially for new members and volunteers, that Sandra has given across the Commonwealth this year.  We are pleased that she will be our featured speaker in July.

Save The Date ~ Saturday, September 30th, 2017 for a day of special events!
Michael Blake
Michael Blake, Vice Chair of the Democratic Committee, will visit Virginia Beach to work with VBDC candidates, campaign staffs and volunteers as we go into high gear for the November election.  After a career in journalism, Blake began his political career in the 2006 "Yes We Can" training program. He then managed three winning state legislative races in Michigan, became President Obama's 2008 Iowa Caucus Constituency vote director, and served in eight additional states, including Michigan, where his team won all seven races as part of their Coordinated campaign. Blake later served as White House Associate Director of Public Engagement and Deputy Associate Director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs. In, 2012 Blake was National Deputy Operation Vote Director for President Obama.  Blake currently is serving in his second term in the New York State Assembly, representing the 79th District.  Since becoming DNC vice chair this year, Blake has been traveling extensively across the country helping Democratic committees and candidates prepare for primary and general elections. We are delighted to welcome Mike to Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads and look forward to his visit.  Check our emails and website for more details about the day’s special events.
