Santa Monica and Grinch should both be memorized by Monday - our next rehearsal!
Most current note from Barry:
Fellow Music Makers: Thanks for the extra time and good work on Monday night. We made some progress on notes, dynamics, and prepping for memorization. We also talked about breath support and consonants we frequently get caught up on like “l” and “r” and “ng.” Add that to the way you take quick, rhythmic breaths from the week before and we should be on the way to an even better sound. These things of course need you to practice them on your own.
Please review what we learned yesterday as quickly as possible. This helps to solidify the learning – cramming the hour before rehearse will not work.
Next Monday you are responsible for having “You’re a Mean Once Mr. Grinch” memorized as you will start working on choralography.
You should also be ready to do most of “Chanukah in Santa Monica” off book.
Please continue your work on all of the music but for this next week we will concentrate on:
“I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus”
“Sure on this Shining Night” There are many recordings of this piece out there so please use the musetta file for your notes and then listen to other groups singing the song.
P.S. I will be out of town at a conference so Mitch will be leading the rehearsal.
Past notes from Barry:
10/11 We learned and reiterated some important things on Monday night including preparatory breaths.
We found some though spots on Monday that we now know require some more attention. I include myself in that as there are certainly some places I need to direct better. We all have some bad nights and last night was mind, thanks for sticking with me.
Music recording are available for several of the songs at this point. Please give them a listen to help you practice. If you can’t figure out how to use Musetta or the recordings, email Jim Johnson.
This coming week is a long rehearsal – please be on time so that we can take full advantage of the time. Here are things to work on for next week:
“Festival Gloria” on Monday we ran the entire piece so now you should have a good idea what you need to work on your own.
“Sure On This Shining Night” we will spend some quality time on this so be prepared
“Oseh Shalom” this is a tough piece but it’s coming along; we will spend some quality time with this piece
“Chanukah in Santa Monica” check some note and rhythms; start memorizing
“You’re a Mean One” be prepared to sing the entire piece from memory
“Silver Bells” we will work from the beginning
10/4 Thanks for the hard work on Monday night. We have made some good progress
and with some individual and group efforts we are ready for some large
steps forward. Your individual work makes all the difference.
This week please review the work we¹ve done with particular focus on "Festival
This next week we will work on "Oseh Shalom," "Chanukah In Santa Monica," and continue work on "I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus."
We will also be reviewing our work on "Sure On This Shining Night."
Have a great week and I hope to see you ALL on Monday!
9/22 Hey folks. Thank you for a great rehearsal last Monday.
“There is Faint Music” Auditions will be Monday. If you are interested please find the music on Musetta https://qmc.musetta.org/folders/502 in the SINGERS-->2016 WINTER folder.
Hopefully you’ve taken my challenge to start looking at your music a little bit each day even if that’s only 10-20 minutes. You can review rhythms, read the words so that you get context and it makes memorization easier, you can sing the notes, or you can listen to a recording.
This week we will continue some work on those pieces but will focus a little on “Sure On This Shining Night,” from rehearsal D to the end; “I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus,” and “Silver Bells.”
Last week we focused on “Festival Gloria,” “Stargazing,” “Chanukah in Santa Monica,” and “Oseh Shalom.”
