Hey, <<First Name>> -

I'm back with a little bit of grace, truth, and good food!

Grace: How to talk to your daughter (or yourself) about body image.

Truth: Which line are you in?

Good food: The salsa I make pretty much every dang week of the summer!

GRACE

If you, or your daughter tends to beat yourself/herself up about weight or body shape, learning to replace that with grace can be hard.

I found an article that explores how to talk to your daughter about her body, shifting the focus off of shape and onto health, and soul. You could also substitute "yourself" everywhere it says "your daughter."

A few excerpts:

"How to talk to your daughter about her body, step one: Don't talk to your daughter about her body, except to teach her how it works.

"If you think your daughter's body looks amazing, don't say that. Here are some things you can say instead: "You look so healthy!" ..."You're looking so strong." ... "I can see how happy you are -- you're glowing."

"Better yet, compliment her on something that has nothing to do with her body.

"Don't comment on other women's bodies [in front of your daughter], either. Nope. Not a single comment, not a nice one or a mean one.

"Teach her about kindness towards others, but also kindness towards [herself]....

"Encourage your daughter to climb mountains because there's nowhere better to explore your spirituality than the peak of the universe. Encourage your daughter to surf, or rock climb, or mountain bike because it scares her and that's a good thing sometimes....

"Remind your daughter that the best thing she can do with her body is to use it to mobilize her beautiful soul."

TRUTH

Ouch! #sadbuttrue

cartoon: pills & surgery vs lifestyle changes

(Hey, by the way, I'm not against people taking pills or having surgery when that's really needed. Both have probably saved my life on more than one occasion. I just think it's best to explore lifestyle alternatives when possible. It's pretty amazing what good food, enough rest, and a little movement can do!)

GOOD FOOD

photo: tomato avocado salsa

I make this salsa pretty much every week during the summer! We have it most often on top of grilled or pan-seared salmon, but it works well with any fish.

It's also a great addition to a green salad, but if you cut the chunks a little bigger, it stands perfectly well on its own as a cool, lovely side dish, too, alongside grilled chicken, steak, or burgers. A big bowl of this is a hit at potlucks, too!

It's shown above with shoe-peg corn, but I now use pine nuts instead. It's a little more nutritious -- and we both like it better that way, too!
