Welcome to our newsletter for Term 3. Athletics is our big focus with the Faction Athletics carnival in Week 8 and the Interschool Carnival in Week 10, which Mount Hawthorn will be hosting at McLean Oval Floreat. It is fantastic to see all the students practising with all the faction teachers, preparing for this big day in September.
The continuation of the ‘Running A Marathon Program’ for 2014 has been a great success for all the students at Mount Hawthorn Primary School. It is evident that the majority of the students’ fitness has improved. Many students from Pre-primary to Year 7 have achieved some of the Marathon milestones. The honour roll in the school newsletter is jam packed with names of students who have reached these milestones. The milestones are; 5km,10km, half a marathon (21km) and a full marathon (42.1km). Students who reach the Marathon milestone will receive a cloth badge which is allowed to be sewn onto their faction athletics shirt on the left sleeve. The "Running A Marathon" program will continue during Term 3.
On Thursday, 12 June 2014 two Mount Hawthorn mixed teams from Year 5, 6 and 7 competed against eight Primary schools in the Champion Schools Hockey competition, at the Perth Hockey Stadium.  After four games on both grass and the international-grade super turf, our two teams placed third in their pools, resulting in a thrilling Mount Hawthorn derby to finish the day. Team 2 secured fifth spot in the rankings with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Team 1.

Well done to all the students for their great teamwork, hockey skills and sportsmanship. Thank you to Kim Ellis and Kathryn Richardson for managing the teams. A special thank you to Fiona Miotti, pictured here with both teams, for coordinating Mount Hawthorn's participation in this competition since 2008. Fiona has been a huge asset to Mount Hawthorn and has done an incredible job to keep hockey alive at our school. She has been the driving force to enter teams into this competition and should be congratulated for all her work in this area. We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to her for all her years of coaching and managing, as this will be her last year at Mount Hawthorn Primary.

CONGRATULATIONS to Bridget from Year 6 for making the Schools W.A state 12`s team. Earlier this month Bridget traveled to Adelaide as part of this team to play in a competition against the other states. W.A came third in the competition and Bridget brought home a bronze medal, well done.
The State School Cross Country event was held at the McGillivray fields on Tuesday, 12 August with four runners from Mount Hawthorn Primary School competing. This is a very tough race with over 300 competitors in each race. The weather on Tuesday was very windy so it made some parts of the course quite difficult. Congratulations to Louis, Kiki, Glenn and Emma for representing Mount Hawthorn. Kiki ran exceptionally well, placing 22nd and Emma 27th. Glenn and Louis also placed well.

During Term 2, Year 6 and 7 students had the opportunity to choose one of the following sports; AFL football, soccer, modcrosse or netball. Every Friday afternoon these students trained during sport time and they were also given the opportunity to compete in some home and away games. The end of Term 2 culminated with a Winter Carnival, where all these students played their various sports at different venues. Congratulations to the football team, Netball B and C teams and Soccer A who won their divisions.
Last term, our school conducted two Fremantle Football Programs “Freo Long Bomb” and “Freo Kwik Kick” during Physical Education lessons. A number of students won their event at school and went to Fremantle Oval on the last Friday of the school holidays to compete against schools from all across the state. We had a number of students who participated in this competition and placed in the top 10. These students have been invited to a Dockers home game at Paterson’s Stadium to compete in the State Grand Final. Well Done. The results were;
Boys Year 4 Long Bomb - Jamie
Boys Year 5 Long Bomb - Ryan
Girls Year 6 Long Bomb - Miki
Boys Year 4 Kwik Kick - Nicholas and Jamie
Boys Year 7 Kwik Kick - Daniel and Tom
Girls Year 7 Kwik Kick - Skye  and Jade
Last term our school took part in the Fever Fast Ball Competition. This is a competition conducted by Netball WA and the West Coast Fever Netball Team. This competition involved students passing a netball in pairs, with the aim being to pass the highest number of successful shoulder passes in a period of 2 minutes. Our school winners were;
YEAR 3 BOYS - James and Daniel
YEAR 4 BOYS - Finn and Robbie
YEAR 4 GIRLS - Chloe and Ruby
YEAR 5 BOYS - Jake and Riley
YEAR 5 GIRLS - Indianna and Katie
YEAR 6 BOYS - Luke and Kieran
YEAR 6 GIRLS - Rosie and Kiki
YEAR 7 BOYS -  Daniel and Milan
YEAR 7 GIRLS - Siri and Beth

During Term 2, Faction Footy was held at lunchtimes between all four factions. The Year 7 Faction Captains were responsible for organising their teams as well as coaching during the games. This year we also had the six AFL School Footy Ambassadors play a significant role officiating, organising and running this event. I would like to thank  Daniel, Kye, Will, Tom, Jake and Ryan for their tremendous effort and application. This year team Menzies were very dominant playing against Braithwaite in the final. It was a fiercely contested final with Menzies prevailing as winners. Congratulations to all Menzies team members and to Milan and Elley as Faction Captains. I would also like to thank all Faction Captains for their effort and organisation over the term.
