Message from Sue and Anita
Welcome to our third newsletter for 2012. Term 3 is always an extremely busy term with Athletics our main event for the term. All the children and teachers are busy training for our carnival on 6 September. Term 3 also marks the conclusion of many out of school winter sports. We would like to thank all the volunteers who coordinate, coach and generally make these sports happen. Your support enables us to run a diverse and exciting program.
CROSS COUNTRY
On 6 June last term, all Year 4 to 7 children participated in the 2012 School Cross Country at Menzies Reserve. The Year 4/5 students completed two laps of the challenging course and Year 6 /7 students completed three laps. Congratulations to all participants on the day for such a great effort.

Interschool Cross Country
64 Year 4 to 7 children were given the opportunity to represent Mount Hawthorn Primary School in the Inter School Cross Country at City Beach Primary School. This year was the first time that Mount Hawthorn participated in this carnival against neighbouring schools. Our Year 4 and 5 students completed a challenging 1.5km course and our Year 6 and 7 students completed a 2km course.
Congratulations to all placed students and well done to everyone who participated and represented our school so well in this event.

FINAL RESULTS:
1st  Wembley,  2nd Mount Hawthorn, 3rd Kapinara and 4th City Beach Primary School.
Placed Students
Year 7 – Mia and Jake, Year 6 – Jacinta, Jacob and Lucas, Year 5 – Logan and Year 4 - Bridget and Jason.
State Cross Country Carnival
The following students participated in the Schools W.A. State Cross Country on 14 August at UWA Sports Park, McGillivray Oval:  Mia and Jake from Year 7, Jacinta and Jacob from Year 6 and Logan from Year 5. This was an extremely large event with over 300 children in each race from Year 5-7. Our students did extremely well to place in such a difficult event; they should be commended for their efforts and commitment. Congratulations to all 5 students, especially Mia and Jacob who finished in the top 15. Well Done!
AFL
Junior AFL Football Clinics
During Term 2 students in Years 1 to 3 had the opportunity to receive 2 days of AFL football clinics by Brendan McFaull, the Junior Football Development Officer for our district East Perth. Brendan did lots of skills and drills with the juniors, encouraging them to play Aussie Rules. Students dodged, weaved and took some fabulous marks with the footballs. Some children went on to enjoy holiday football clinics with East Perth during the July school holidays.
Rick "The Rock" Eagle visited our school earlier last term talking about the 5 R's. Respect Yourself, Respect Others, Respect the Environment, Reach out into the Community and Reach your Potential. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the talk and the humorous antics of Rick the Rock Eagle. Sharran Collis (Year 4 teacher) joined the Eagle and our students on stage to reinforce the RESPECT message.
Part two of the RICK “THE ROCK” EAGLE program was a small footy clinic provided by the West Coast Eagles. Thank you to Anton Hamp, for demonstrating his football expertise and showing patience in answering many questions from our Year 4 and 5 students.
Freo Long Bomb and Kwik Kick
Our school conducted two Fremantle Football programs “Freo Long Bomb” and “Freo Kwik Kick” last term during physical education lessons. A number of students won their event at school and competed against schools from across the state at Fremantle Oval during school holidays. We had a number of students who participated in this competition and placed in the top 10. They were invited to a home Dockers game at Paterson’s stadium to compete in the State Grand Final.
RESULTS
YEAR 4/5 BOYS KWIK KICK - Daniel & Steele – Placed 2nd
YEAR 4 GIRLS LONG BOMB – Logan - Placed 8th
YEAR 6/7 BOYS KWIK KICK – Jordan & Lucas – Placed 6th
YEAR 6/7 BOYS LONG BOMB – Jake – Placed 4th
Faction Footy
A footy competition was held at lunchtimes between all four factions last term. The Year 7 faction captains were responsible for organising their teams, coaching during the game and officiating in their bye weeks. This year the competition was very close, with Shakespeare and Menzies making the finals. It was a fiercely contested final with Menzies prevailing as winners. Congratulations to all Menzies team members and to Jake, Angus, Tylah and Georgia as Faction Captains.
We would also like to thank all Faction Captains for their effort and organisation over the term.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
During Term 2, Vienna Young from the Heart Foundation came to Mount Hawthorn to launch the Jump Rope For Heart Program. Throughout the term students participated in skipping activities and learnt new skills to further increase their levels of fitness. This year on-line only fundraising was introduced to try and raise much needed funds for the Heart Foundation. Our students and families raised $5784.00, a fantastic effort by all involved. To celebrate the conclusion we held a `Jump off Day` on the last Wednesday of Term 2. The children skipped with their buddy classes, moving around the school trying different skipping and jumping skills. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped on the day. The children were allowed to dress up in red to represent the heart and thoroughly enjoyed the time they spent with their buddies.

Newman Primary School Jump Rope Demo Team
Mt Hawthorn Primary was fortunate to have the Newman Primary Jump Rope team visit to demonstrate their fabulous jumping skills and inspired our students to try different skills at our Jump off Day.

PRIMARY HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS
On a wet, windy & showery Thursday morning in Term 2, Mount Hawthorn students donned their shin pads and mouth guards to prepare themselves for friendly combat with Northern Suburb Primary Schools in the Primary Hockey Championships.  Students experienced playing on an artificial hockey surface at Perth Hockey Stadium, Curtin University.  Teams played 4 matches in a round robin competition.  The final game was a Derby (Mount Hawthorn vs Mount Hawthorn) with all students enjoying the opportunity to play hockey in a fun, competitive and respectful manner.
Mount Hawthorn Primary School has been attending these championships since 2008 as a combined team with Newman Primary School.  Teams comprise of students from Year 5, 6 or 7 and are of mixed gender.
In 2012 we had a record number of students participating with a total of 26 players, therefore Mount Hawthorn entered 2 teams.  Team 1, Mount Hawthorn Year 7 and Yr 6 Students and Team 2, Mount Hawthorn Year 5 and Yr 6 and 7 students from Newman Primary School
Many thanks to Courtney McCartney from Como Senior High School (Year 12 student) who kindly volunteered to coach the Year 6/7 team.  Also, a very big thank you to Louise Swain, who has coached the combined team for the past few years and special thanks to our team managers, Jane Jenkin & Kerrily Waters for Team 1 and Dee Donachie for Team 2.
We would like to acknowledge Hale Hockey Club and University of WA Hockey Club for providing Goalkeeping equipment on the day.
All students and parents enjoyed the experience. A big thank you to Louise Swain and Fiona Miotti for their organization to make this possible and for their coaching and expertise.
WINTER CARNIVAL
Interschool Sport
Throughout Term 2 all Year 6 and 7 students are given the opportunity to represent the school in a chosen sport. The choices of sport are; Netball, Football, Modcrosse and Soccer.
The students train as a team during their class sport sessions and lunch times. They then put the skills they develop into practice when they play against other schools throughout the term.
Their hard work prepares the students for the annual Winter Carnival held in the last week of term. Five primary schools come together to compete in the finals representing Subiaco, Floreat, Wembley, Highgate and Mount Hawthorn.
Once again this year all students are to be commended on their performance and the friendly manner in which they competed. In particular the Netball A Team is to be congratulated on their outstanding results. They were undefeated throughout the term and won the shield at the carnival.
