Preparing for life and equipping for service

"Preparing for life and equipping for service” is the core of the mission of Biblijski Institut. Over the years God has opened doors in ways that were not dreamed of when we began this work in Zagreb. We envisioned conventional classes with a ministry-focused curriculum. Outstanding students have come through our programs and are now effectively serving Christ in Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, and even in the USA. However, every year new opportunities are presented that challenge us to fulfill our core mission in related, but different ways. A children's summer camp (Champs Camp) has not only ministered to children and families, but also provided practical “hands on experience” for students. Publishing Kairos and other books and materials has caused the academic community to see us as a serious educational community. Conferences and symposiums have caused the media to write about us as an institution which takes the Bible seriously. Now we are taking our faculty and materials directly to the churches in Croatia. Through all these experiences God is giving the Institute an opportunity to be an agent for unity among believers and church communities. "Preparing for life" requires that we point to Jesus, who is “Life.” Effective service demands that “servants” take seriously Jesus’ prayer that His followers be one. Pray for us that we will be faithful to the mission given to us.

Children's Bibles for Elementary Schools

You may remember that a few months ago we distributed children's Bibles to a local elementary school, on the request of the Catholic priest who teaches the required catechism class in that school. This priest was so impressed with our children's Bible that he requested copies for use in the school with which he works.

We are now getting more requests from others schools for the children's Bible, and we are working on how to fulfill these requests.

Student Spotlight
Igman Čokić

Igman Čokić is a third year student. He is from the small town of Rajevo Selo, in eastern Croatia. He enjoys reading and sports, and was part of our Futsal (indoor soccer) team last year. Igman is newly married (September of last year) to Aleksandra, who is a great ministry partner with him. After graduation from the institute, Igman and Aleksandra plan to move to Šibenik, where they will serve with a church in that city.

Faculty Spotlight
Scott and Jayne Cuidon

Scott and Jayne Cuidon began partnering with us this spring as adjunct faculty. They are teaching a class in Biblical Counseling. The Cuidons have six children and have been living and working in Croatia for 20 years. They are affiliated with Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU). They live in a village just outside Zagreb where they run a counseling center (Barnabas Zentrum) for missionaries and national pastors in crisis throughout Europe.

Extension Program in Split – Taking the Institute to the Church

This spring we started offering extension courses in other cities in Croatia. We started this program in the coastal city of Split. We have seven students in the program from 2-3 different churches in and around Split. The program is being hosted by a local church in Split and we are sending one of our professors there one weekend out of each month to teach the class. One entire course is taught over a span of two weekends. We will offer them eight different courses this way, over a two year period. The program has thus far been well-received by the students in Split, and we are looking to replicate this approach in other cities in Croatia. We plan to offer the program next in the city of Rijeka, starting in the fall. We have potentially about 12 students in that city. Please pray with us about these opportunities to increase the reach of the Institute in preparing churches and individuals to expand the Kingdom in this land.

Alumni Reception
On Saturday, May 24, we hosted a reception for alumni of the institute. We had a great barbecue lunch together at the home of Tom and Sandra Sibley. We heard from each alumnus in attendance, about their lives and ministries since graduation. We also spent some time praying for each graduate, their families, and their ministries. It was an encouraging time for all of us. We ended the time together by enlisting the help of the graduates in recruiting new students for the institute. We think our alumni are perhaps our best "walking advertisements" for the school.

Student-led Worship Service
On April 30, several of our students led us in a worship service for the institute. This was an exercise as part of their Practicum class. The service was in the assembly space used by the church with which we share the building. Students, their spouses, faculty, staff, and some church members were in attendance. The theme of the service came from the book of 1st John.

Harding University Choir Concert
On Friday evening, May 30, we hosted the choir from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas for a concert in Zagreb. This was a stop on a European tour for them. The concert was well received by the audience and we were blessed to have such a group make a stop with us in Zagreb.

 Student and Faculty News

Several of our faculty, staff, and students participated in the annual spring spiritual renewal retreat of the Churches of Christ in Croatia. The retreat was held in the coastal city of Crikvenica.
