It's 2013 and there's no rest for those who love Argentine tango in Australia!
We launch into the new year with some absolutely fabulous and amazing teachers and events coming to our shores in the next few months - no doubt a sign of things to come.

Below we've put together a run-down on what we know is happening! Chances are we have missed something, if so please let us know in time for the next newsletter (early in February). There is so much happening that we recommend that you keep an eye on the TangoAustralia website for videos and information on the events coming up. We will post videos, interviews and news as they become available.

2012 was a great a year and we have no doubt that we will say the same for 2013.
We wish you all a healthy, prosperous and happy 2013 and look forward to meeting you on the dance floor!



22 to 28 January
Julio Balmaceda and Corina de la Rosa together with Rodrigo Palacios and Agustina Berenstein (on their second visit) will present workshops and milongas in Sydney at the Evolution and Essence Festival.

25 to 28 January
Melbourne Summer Tango Celebration. Four nights of milongas over the Australia Day weekend.
The Melbourne tango community invites you to come to their fabulous city to dance at night and enjoy the city during the day. For more information go to their Facebook page.

1-4 March
Michelle Marsidi and Joachim Dietikers will be in Hobart and hosted by the Tasmanian Tango Club.

7-10 March Summer tango
in Nelson, NZ

This will be the third event put on by the tangueros of Nelson. It is purely about dancing - there are no teachers and no performances. The event is an opportunity for tango dancers from all over to connect and get to know each other while enjoying the music of the DJs of New Zealand.

8-10 March
Intensive Tango Weekend in Sydney with Roberto Montenegro and Lam Yuriko (pictured above).
Workshops, milongas and performances will provide a packed weekend of tango with this popular couple  who visited Sydney this time last year.

7-11 March
We have heard that Cecilia Gonzales and Ney Melo will visit Adelaide but have yet to confirm this.

8-10 March
Michelle Marsidi and Joachim Dietikers will be in Perth and hosted by Tango Space.

Throughout March this competition will hold qualifying rounds at milongas around Sydney.
Then over the Easter weekend which is at the end of the month, 29th March to 1st April, the finals will be held.
Carolina Bonaventura and Francisco Forquera will be the judges and will hold workshops in Sydney after the event.

19-21 April
Demian Garcia will visit our shores again, this time going to Adelaide. Demian has visited Australia before and this time will return with Fatima Vitale for the Buenos Aires in the Vales Tango Festival. Barefoot Tango on the beach, four  milongas, shows, live music, regional food, wine, free community events, and of course a great workshop program for all levels over the weekend…the festival website will be updated as events are confirmed. Demian & Fatima will also be teaching a special pre festival workshop with practica on Thursday 18 April in Adelaide, before the festivities begin down in beautiful McLaren Vale on Friday 19th.

Hosanna Heinrich and Anibal Montenegro will tour Australia and New Zealand for workshops and performances. This couple toured in 2012 and are very popular - so watch out for more details.


13 July
Performance by international tango maestros and directors of Conjuro Tango at A Little Buenos Aires milonga in Ashfield.

Bali. 19-26 July
Tango in the Tropics
David Backler and Diane Heywood-Smith (see above)from Melbourne's Sidewalk Tango will take this tour to Bali and the secluded seaside village of Mendira. Presented by Gadfly/Gallery Tours this is an opportunity to immerse yourself in tango in the warm tropics in the middle of the Australian winter.

Ricardo and Laura at Lizotte's February 2013


11- 26 February 2013,
Ricardo Barrios and Laura Melo visiting Sydney and Newcastle. This dynamic couple (pictured above) are very popular on the festival and workshop circuit. Ricardo has performed with Mora Godoy and Miguel Zotto's theatre groups and has trained as an actor as well as a dancer, working in folklore and choreography as well as tango. Similarly Laura has extensive dance training as well as being an accomplished pianist and has performed in tango productions as well as Festivals around the world.

February 14 Dee WhyBelen Tango
Valentines Day with The Red Rose Argentinian Tango
Belen Tango together with Tangalo, Sydney's leading tango orchestra, will present a magical night of performance at Lizottes.
Lizotte's is a new theatre/restaurant located at Dee Why on Sydney's northern beaches.

Martini Tango Milonga at the Fabulous Spiegeltent in Perth with
Sidewalk Tango in association with ChampagneTangoPerth present a tango cabaret show at the fabulous Spiegeltent as part of Fringeworld Perth 2103.
Performances, cabaret and a milonga in this amazing tent which was built of canvas, wood, mirrors and stained glass at the turn of the 19th/20th century.

February 18-24
Tango Argentino Fesitvalito, Melbourne
cecilia gonzalez and ney melo visit Australia 2013Featuring: Cecilia Gonzalez y Ney Melo  and Michelle Marsidi y Joachim Dietikers. Cecilia has visited Australia a number of times before and has many fans. So too does Ney who visited us quite some years ago. It will be a first visit for Michelle and Joachim. You can watch them perform on this youtube video. Cecilia and Ney do not usually perform together. You will find a video of Cecilia dancing with Somer Surgit at the Toronto Tango Festival last year here...
and at the same Festival Ney dancing with Elinor Westrup...

20 to 23 June
The 12th New Zealand Tango Festival will once again offer 3 days and four nights of workshops, milongas, performances, getting to know others who share your love of tango in a beautiful and friendly space. There are immersion courses before the Festival and because it is held in such a beautiful part of the world there is much to explore.

TangoAustralia presents two traditional BA-style milongas a month on Sydney's lower north shore. We use any profits from these milongas to fund this website and these newletters - and we also aim to have a great night!!
