HOPE ON CROWN:  OASIS UPDATE

The Oasis year started afresh with renewed enthusiasm and new faces.
There's a lot to look forward to this year with our many programs about to kick off again, s
o hang on tight as we launch into this exciting new year!

Operations Manager's Update
It is hard to believe but it only seems like yesterday that I joined the team at Oasis. Three months into the role and I am continually impressed by the professionalism and perseverance of our staff. They continue to do some amazing work and achieve amazing outcomes with the young people at Oasis.

Our specialist homelessness services continue to support the many young people that we see each year moving into the inner Sydney area in the search for a roof over their heads.  As a result of a recent review, we will be shortly welcoming a new manager into Oasis to specifically head up our SHS accommodation services.
Our street outreach and therapeutics teams continue to provide high quality evidence based interventions that continue to assist our young people to overcome their barriers and actively pursue a better quality of life.

Our Education and Training programs continue to go from strength to strength and our social enterprise team are working on a number of exciting new initiatives.

The wider inner Sydney network recently welcomed two new staff – our new Mission Director Major Bryce Davies and our new Social Programs Director Lesley Butt.  Bryce joins us from Brisbane where he ran the Brisbane City Street Level service.  Lesley joins the team at the Salvation Army from another major agency where she has over 20 years experience in a diverse array of highly regarded community services.  Both Lesley’s and Bryce’s experience will add considerable value to the work that we do at Oasis.

We also have a number of exciting new initiatives and projects that we will be rolling out over the coming months as well as a number of new tenders and grant applications that we are waiting to hear back from.

Thank you for your continued support of our service, together with you, we can make a difference in young people's lives.

Freeway Program
Freeway continues to offer the young people a healthy alternative with fun activities focussed on physical well being.
Thanks to the Virgin Active team, the gym at Oasis has been upgraded with new equipment and sound system ready to reopen it's doors.  Members of the Virgin Active team will be volunteering their time to provide weekly training sessions for the young people from Wednesday 9 March.  Thanks Virgin Active!
Pathways to Employment
Growing stronger with more eager applicants each year, Pathways program co-ordinator Lukis Smith has now completed the interview process for six young people to participate in the course starting on 8 March.  This is a great opportunity for the young people to train and prepare themselves for the workforce.
StreetMedia
StreetMedia has now incorporated a Chill Out Zone and this 'quiet time' for art, board games, puzzles or computer use is proving to be a winner.  StreetMedia continues to offer music sessions both for individuals or groups, as well as movies and X-Box times.
The Photography Course is restarting again on 15 March for 5 weeks and is always a popular course for photographers of all levels.
Oasis Fundraising
Heading up the Oasis fundraising team is Sophia Masur, Fundraising Manager, housed at The Salvation Army THQ.
Sophia's focus on fundraising campaigns this year include The Larapinta Trek, The Sun Herald City2Surf running festival, The Couch Project and Carols in the Domain Candle Bag Selling.

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers and staff who sold Candle Bags at Carols in the Domain.  YOU helped raise approximately $114,000 for Oasis YSN!

WATCH THIS SPACE for another special Oasis event, being earmarked before the end of the year!
Sophia also supports community fundraisers such as the dynamic Kayaking trio,
David Linco, Mark Hempel and Rodrigo Matamala who have just completed their paddling adventure across Bass Strait achieving their goal to raise funds for the education centre at Oasis.
Grand achievement gents!
SUPPORT OUR LARAPINTA TREKKERS!

Mmm....are you sure you're both in training?

Save the Date
Katie will be holding a stall at Surry Hills  Markets early in April  (date to be confirmed) and will be selling a range of goodies such as vintage clothes, jams & chutneys, plants, games, books, knick knacks and much more, to help reach her fundraising target.
Welcome to our new Admin Support Volunteers
Lynette didn't want to just sit at home and 'twiddle her thumbs' so jumped at the opportunity to volunteer at Oasis.  Lynette is putting years of admin experience to very good use and is also a keen knitter so is starting on some scarves for the young people for winter.
Sowmya moved from southern India with her husband 18 months ago and is following her heart by volunteering at Oasis.  Sowmya also works part time doing garden maintenance.

Anne hails all the way from Germany and is currently working part time at Pancakes on the Rocks.  Rather than actually have a day off, Anne would prefer to volunteer for a charity and Oasis was her place of choice.  Anne hopes to continue her volunteering with The Salvation Army in Germany once she returns home.

It's wonderful to have you working with us ladies and thank you for donating your valuable time, expertise and for your contribution to Oasis YSN.
