Christian Unity Prayer Service Rescheduled

In the northern hemisphere, the week of January 18-25 is celebrated each year ecumenically with the whole church.  Congregations and parishes all over the world exchange preachers or arrange special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services.   The theme this year is "Justice" - from Deuteronomy 16:18-20 "Justice and only justice you shall pursue".

Join us for Wednesday Worship on Jan. 30 at 6:30 for a prayer service led by FYI, with scripture, prayer and contemplative music. Prayer Stations included in the service are a large floor map of the world for praying, a labyrinth for meditation and other participatory activities.  All are welcome.

Coming soon… An exploration of what it means to be a congregation focused on “Discipleship.” Watch for details beginning February 3 at worship.

All are welcome.

LAY MINISTRY SIGNUP

The SignUpGenius self-sign up for Lay Ministry is working great.  Most of the assignments are being filled this way and it results in far fewer schedule conflicts.  Any opening that are not selected are still assigned as in the past.  If you know you have a conflict for particular dates, let the office know so you are not scheduled. office@churchoftheresurrection.org

Following is the link to sign up for Lay Ministry slots in February 2019.

The value of the tin is $200, and you can purchase one for just $30! We have Lake Country, Milwaukee Heritage, and Milwaukee Restaurant tins for sale. These make fantastic gifts! Pick up one (or a few) on Sunday morning or connect with Tiffany Kollmeyer. You can learn more about the City Tins here:  https://citytins.com/

The “Souper” Bowl of Caring is a pan-denominational gathering of gifts to share with those who are in need.  It began nearly three decades ago when a church youth group in Texas prayed,
Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those who don’t even have a bowl of soup to eat.

Since then, more than $143 million dollars have been raised for local charities around the country through “Souper Bowl” of caring. It has become a powerful movement to transform the big game into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving.

On Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, COR will be collecting your gifts of money and non-perishable food items in a special Souper Bowl event. Please be a part sharing God’s love with those in need—give generously on Super/Souper Bowl Sunday.

How do I participate?
-Bring cans of soup.
– Write a check to the church for Souper Bowl Sunday with “Souper Bowl” on the memo line.
– Bring some dollar bills with you that Sunday for the offering at the door.

Save the Date for Vacation Bible School 2019!
This summer, we will be traveling "To Mars and Beyond" with VBS. Mark your calendar for Monday through Thursday, June 24-27, 5:30-7:30 pm. VBS is for children ages 3 through 5th grade (yes, 5th-graders, we've changed our age range so you can still be part of the fun!). Stay tuned for more information in March.

The Word for Your Week…
The reflections/questions relate to the highlighted passage for the day.

Prayer for your Week
Blessed Lord God, you have caused the holy scriptures to be written for the nourishment of your people. Grant that we may hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that, comforted by your promises, we may embrace and forever hold fast to the hope of eternal life, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sunday, January 27:     Psalm 19        I Corinthians 12:12-31              Luke 4:14-21
What do you suppose is the good news Jesus brings to the poor? What kind of release to which captives? Do you think Jesus brings the same message to today’s poor and captive as he did when speaking in Nazareth two thousand years ago? Explain.

Monday, January 28:     Psalm 119:89-96          Jeremiah 36:1-10            1 Corinthians 14:1-12
The psalmist praises God’s law, and proclaims God’s faithfulness to all generations. How does God display his faithfulness in your own life? Explain.

Tuesday, January 29:    Psalm 119:89-96         Jeremiah 36:11-26           2 Corinthians 7:2-12
In this passage, the apostle Paul speaks of ‘godly grief’ being a blessing because it causes repentance. Have you experienced this grief? Has it prompted you to change the direction of your life? Explain.

Wednesday, January 30:   Psalm 119:89-96    Jeremiah 36:27-32           Luke 4:38-44
This is one of several passages in the New Testament where demons are said to recognize Jesus for who he is. Why do you suppose that Jesus kept them from telling others that he is the Messiah?

Thursday, January 31:    Psalm 71:1-6          2 Chronicles 34:1-7            Acts 10:44-48
Why do you suppose that the Jewish believers were so astounded that the Holy Spirit would be given to Gentiles(non-Jews)? How was this different from the previous separation from Jews and Gentiles according to the law of Moses?

Friday, February 1:       Psalm 71:1-6     2 Chronicles 35:20-27             Acts 19:1-10
The psalmist prays for God’s protection and help. How has God been your refuge in times of difficulty? How has God rescued you from evil? Were you aware of God’s action at the time or did you recognize it only in retrospect? Explain.

Saturday, February 2:    Psalm 71:1-6     2 Chronicles 36:11-21            John 1:43-51
This brief passage in John’s gospel contains what is probably the shortest and simplest example of invitation/outreach/evangelism in the whole Bible, when Philip said to Nathanael, “Come and see.”  Who might you invite to ‘come and see’ about Jesus? What would you hope to show your guest? Explain.
