WEBSTER AREA: Interim leader becomes new executive director

We are pleased to announce that our current interim director, Melissa Fose, will become the new executive director for Webster Area Development Corporation and Day County Champion Community.
Fose has been the interim director since mid-December. She kept the office doors open and continued projects while our board searched for someone to fill the position formerly held by Nick Fosheim.
“There are a lot of great things going on—and in the works—in the Webster Area, and I am thrilled to continue being a part of it!” said Fose.

Like this post to welcome Melissa as the new director for WADC and DCCC.

Fose earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from South Dakota State University. Following graduation, she served as an AmeriCorps*VISTA member at Volunteers of America, Dakotas in Sioux Falls, later accepting a full-time position at the organization.
Fose was hired in June 2012 as the first-ever marketing assistant for Webster Area Development Corporation. Since then, she has led WADC’s employee recruitment initiative; developed content for the website, email newsletter and seven social media accounts; and developed new marketing campaigns and materials.
“With the booming job market in Day County, we needed to enhance our online resources,” said Fose. “We want local businesses to do well, and doing well includes having a full staff.”
WADC launched its “Day County Jobs” Facebook page in August and Twitter page in November. The special initiative has paid off, because there are nearly 2,000 monthly visits to’s
Employment Opportunities page, more than 125 likes on Facebook, and almost 50 followers on Twitter.
These online resources are offered to businesses as a complement to advertising efforts.
“While we continue to be focused on securing new jobs for Webster Area, we are finding that it is necessary to also recruit individuals to fill the 65 positions that are already available,” said Tom Sannes, president of the WADC board.
Webster Area has a variety of jobs available in industries, such as: agriculture, automotive, construction, education, food service, health care, manufacturing, office, sales and more.

NORTHEASTERN SD: Economic developers focus on regional efforts through Bush Foundation pilot

A Bush Foundation grant offers community and economic developers additional opportunity to think regionally.

We have, in fact, been working together to enhance the region for years through quarterly meetings, training and the like; however, this Prairie Vision pilot provides abundant expertise through Bush Foundation, Dakota Resources, Governor's Office of Economic Development and each other.

On March 26, our pilot team enlisted the help of our friends in the North East Regional Developers group to work with consultants to
discuss and visually show the assets of our region.

Webster Area Development Corporation is engaged in this great regional effort to see the bigger picture, build collaboration and enhance northeastern South Dakota as a whole. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!

TIPS: Ask questions to assess advertising reach and effectiveness

This past weekend, I heard a radio advertisement for my uncle's towing business. I made a mental note to call or email about hearing the ad. A few days later, I realize that I haven't yet done so.

We always hope that our supporters will tell us that our advertisements are great--or even that they heard/saw them--but they may not realize that their mention helps us quantify our return on investment. (Or, they may just forget like me!)

So, when in doubt, ask!

Try an open-ended question, such as, "How did you hear about us?" (a.k.a. "Old Reliable"). You're sure to learn a thing or two, and may be surprised or encouraged by their responses.

Now, I must ask, how did you hear about this email newsletter? And, is it working for you?

Let me know how your asking goes! Contact me at or 605-345-3159.

Until next time,

Melissa signature
