Welcome to the Basis Yorkshire Newsletter!

We've had a very busy few months here at Basis Yorkshire and lots of things to update you on, including funding success, new staff members and some exciting media coverage. Don't forget to keep updated with all our latest news by following us on social media and checking out our website...

Introducing Our New Project!

Basis Yorkshire is now also working in York and North Yorkshire! where we have set up the Time 2 Project, in partnership with MESMAC. Time 2 Project supports young people (boys and girls) at risk of and experiencing CSE in the City of York and North Yorkshire, based on the expertise developed by both organisations in Leeds, funded by the Big Lottery and the Henry Smith charity. Still in pilot phase, the project is part of a wider national project, funded by the CSE Funders Alliance, which is funding the design, delivery and evaluation of CSE Hub and Spoke models in different parts of the country. The findings from this work will feed into national learning on CSE through the evaluation by Bedfordshire University.

National CSE Day 2016

Basis Young People marked CSE day 2016 by joining in with the #helpinghand campaign. We carried out a workshop in a local high school and created a video to raise awareness and encourage people to make pledges on how they will help the fight against CSE. Follow this link to watch the video we made with the generous help of the White Rose Rotary Club and the young people involved.
Winter Wellbeing Fund

Earlier this year, we were awarded a grant from Leeds Community Foundation to improve the health and wellbeing of our service users during the cold winter months. We carried out a questionnaire to identify health needs and barriers in accessing services. With the fund, we gave out almost 60 winter warmth packs including thermals, hat, scarf, gloves hot water bottles and a brolly. We also managed to provide money for emergency heating and electricity for 7 women.

Introducing New Staff!

We're very excited to have a Nicky Pickup, who joined the adult team as a Health Support and Advocacy Worker earlier this year. Her role is to provide health and well being support to service users and reduce stigma and discrimination that creates barriers for sex workers accessing health services. Welcome Nicky!

Also joining us is Kinga Ratusznik, our new Administrator who will be supporting us with all things admin in both our Leeds office and our new York office. Welcome Kinga!

Rosa Fund Success

Basis Sex Work Project has been awarded a grant from the Rosa Fund in order to create a project that explores 'voices from the frontline'. We are hoping to create another resource after the success of our No Longer Invisible book, telling the stories of our service users and giving a voice to them. Look our for upcoming videos as we move forward with this project!

The Victoria Derbyshire Show

Basis Yorkshire worked with the BBC to create a short film with the intention of sharing a more human side to the women that work in the managed area in Leeds, which was featured on the
Victoria Live (BBC 2 9am) program on Tuesday April 12. We are very proud of our team and service users for giving a voice to sex workers in Leeds and raising awareness of the need to reduce stigma and discrimination surrounding sex work. To watch the full show including the film and a live interview, follow this link. To find out more about the reasons for our involvement, please read this blog post.
